Pirates swamped by Logos
The Prairie football team was overwhelmed by Logos 12-54 Friday, Sept. 26 at Cottonwood.
Similar to last year’s game at Moscow, Prairie was able to score first then Logos took over. Chris Schumacher battled his way through several defenders to score Prairie’s first touchdown against Logos.
Prairie received the opening kickoff and started at their own 17. They were able to pick up a couple of first downs thanks to encroachment penalties by the Knights. Levi Gehring gained 8 on the first play from scrimmage and Logos jumped offside on the next play.
Kade Quintal picked up 7 on a second and 10 run and Logos was again offsides on the next play setting up first and 10 at Prairie 42.
Quintal passed to Peyton Stamper for 22 yards to move the ball to the Logos 36. After a 4-yard run by Gehring, Quintal passed to Gehring for 14 yards and a first down at the 18.
At that point the drivestalled and Prairie turned the ball over on downs at the Logos 18.
On the Knights second play from scrimmage, they turned the ball over on a fumble with Ashton Martin recovering at the Logos 33.
Gehring picked up 2 yards on the next play but was hit after going out of bounds resulting in a 15 yard penalty that moved the ball to the 16.
Two plays net just 1 yard then Quintal connected with Levi McElroy for 9 yards and a first down at the 6. On the next play Chris Schumacher went up the middle for 6 yards and the game’s first touchdown. The 2-point run was stopped short as Prairie took a 6-0 lead.
Logos returned the kickoff 23 yards to their own 43. On the next play quarterback Joseph Sensing broke through for a 57 yard scoring run. Schumacher intercepted the 2-point pass leaving the score at 6-6.
Prairie was forced to pun after 3 pass plays on their next possession after starting on their own 13.
Logos took over at the Prairie 37 after the punt. They needed just 4 plays to score the go-ahead touchdown with Sensing passing to Ole Sundlie for the final 26 yards. They added the 2-pointer for a 6-14 lead.
Prairie started their next possession at their 27. On the kickoff return Gehring turned his ankle and was hobbled the rest of the game. He sat out the ensuing offensive series.
On third and 9 Quintal connected with McElroy for 32 yards to moved the ball to the Logos 40. The next 4 plays netted just 3 yards as Prairie turned the ball over on downs at the Logos 37.
The Knights need just 1 play to score again. Sensing again connected with Sundlie down the left sideline for 63 yards. Prairie stopped the 2-point run but now trailed 6-20.
Prairie picked up a couple of first downs on their next possession. The first came on a defensive holding penalty on second and 12. On the next play Quintal connected with Stamper for 10 yards and another first down.
On fourth and 7 from the Logos 40, Quintal’s pass was intercepted by Logos at the 19.
Logos took 8 plays to go 81 yards for another touchdown with Sensing passing to Gideon Haney for the final 25 yards. The 2-point pass failed as Logos took a 6-26 lead.
Prairie started their next possession on their own 17. Quintal passed to Schumacher for 17  and then to Cooper Riener for 8 yards. On fourth and 1 at the 43, Quintal’s pass fell incomplete as Logos took over on downs.
The Knights need 6 plays to added another touchdown with Honour Mallery going in from the 4. The 2-point pass was good for a 6-34 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Riener returned the ball 18 yards to the 32 but fumbled and Logos recovered at the Prairie 32.
They need just 5 plays to added another touchdown as time ran out in the half. Sensing went in from the 4 and then Logos added the 2-pointer for a 6-42 halftime lead.
Logos then received the second half kickoff and started at their own 42. 5 plays later Sensing passed to Baxter Covington for 20 yards and another touchdown. McElroy tackled the runner short of the goal line on the 2-point try but Logos now led 6-48. That meant the rest of the game would be played with a running clock.
Prairie took over after the kickoff on their own 27. A 13 yard pass from Quintal to Schumacher moved the ball to the 38. A 9 yard completion to McElroy and a 4 yard run by Quintal led to another first down. Defensive holding moved the ball to the Logos 39.
Quintal passed to McElroy for 14 yards and another first down. After 2 plays netted 0 yards, Quintal completed a screen pass to Riener for 9 yards to set up fourth and 1. Quintal then picked up the first down on a sneak to the 15. On fourth and 13 from the 18, Quintal was able to connected with McElroy for 18 yards and a touchdown. The 2-point pass failed leaving Prairie trailing 12-48.
Logos took over after the kickoff on their own 46 and needed just 1 play to score again. Sensing passed to Miles Miller for 54 yards. Schumacher stopped the 2-point run short of the goal line but Logos now led 12-54 with 9:43 to play.
Prairie put together another drive with McElroy completing a pass to Gehring on fourth and 11 on a fake punt play for 20 yards. A pass from Quintal to Schumacher for 8 and a 3 yard run by Quintal moved the ball to the Prairie 47.
A defensive holding penalty on 2nd and 15 gave Prairie another first down at the Logos 48. A pass play lost 2 yards then Quintal was sacked for a loss as time ran out.
Prairie’s running game was shut down by the Knights as they gained just 33 yards on 19 attempts. Gehring had 12 yards on 4 carries, all in the first quarter.
Quintal completed 24 for 39 passes with 1 interception for 213 yards. McElroy was 1 for 1 for 20 yards.
McElroy caught 8 passes for 79 yards. Schumacher caught 8 passes for 52 yards. Gehring caught 4 for 34 yards. Riener caught 3 for 15 yards and Stamper caught 2 for 32 yards.
Logos gained 238 yards rushing on 24 attempts led by Sensing who had 110 yards on 13 carries. Sensing also completed 7 of 9 passes for 230 yards. Sundlie was the leading receiver with 89 yards on 2 catches.
Defensively Schumacher had 4 solo and 6 assisted tackles plus an intercepted 2-point pass. Quintal had 3 solo and 3 assisted tackles. Lane Mader had 8 assists and 1 sack. Martin had 1 solo and 5 assists with 1 fumble recovery. Stamper had 2 solos and 1 assist. Max Rehder had 1 sack. Oliver VanHouten had 1 solo tackle. Gehring, Trajan Elven and Zachary Schumacher each had 1 assist.
Prairie is now 3-2 on the season and 1-2 in league play. Their next game is Homecoming against C.V. this Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.
