Cecil D. Andrus Symposium set for Worley
The Cecil D. Andrus Symposium, organized by the Democratic parties in Idaho’s ten northernmost counties, will honor the well-respected and longest serving Democratic governor of Idaho who also served as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1977-1981. The event will highlight Andrus’ ability to transcend traditional political divides, even as a Democrat in an increasingly conservative state, which is a testament to his unique connection to protecting Idaho’s pristine landscapes, his integrity, his willingness to take tough stances, and his authentic persona, leaving a legacy that continues to be remembered and cherished.
The event is open to all and will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 4, at the Coeur d’Alene Casino in Worley. Registration that includes meals must be completed by Friday, Sept. 26, at this website: https://bit.ly/4fUDZON. After that date, a reservation can be made for $25, but no meals will be included. However, there are many meal choices available at the casino. Attendees wishing to book a room can call 1-800-523-2464.
The full event schedule can be found on the website. Morning speakers include Michelle King of the LC Valley Youth Resources Center, Luke Mayville of Reclaim Idaho, Melanie Folwell of Idahoans United for Women and Families and former state representative Sally Toone of the Unity Alliance of Southern Idaho, which works with one of Idaho's three refugee centers and programs. Also featured will be “MaMaw,” a progressive blogger from rural Ohio known for her social media presence as “MaMaw’s Porch ‘n Politics.”
The afternoon will include action stations and fundraising activities, while the evening will showcase engaging featured speakers, including Monica Church, granddaughter of Cecil Andrus and a current Idaho legislator, who will speak about her grandfather and “The Way Things Were.”
Additional featured speakers include Idaho Democratic statewide and congressional candidates, as well as former Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, the longest serving attorney general in Idaho history, who will speak about “House Bill 93 and The Way Things Are Now,” focusing on how current events are challenging the rule of law, due process, and our constitutional rights. The evening will close with a Keynote Speaker, candidate for District 1 Congressional Representative, Kaylee Peterson, speaking about “The Way Forward.”
The event organizers have the goal of providing this event as an opportunity for Idahoans to work together toward a brighter, stronger, and more just future for our state and nation. For questions about this event, email: cecildandrussymposium@gmail.com.
