To the Library and Beyond Prairie Community Library, Inc. – Your nonprofit, all volunteer source. The schedule for the October meeting of the Board of Directors of Prairie Community Library, Inc. is Thursday 9 October at 10 AM in the Library. This week’s featured volunteer is Colleen Wilson. Colleen was treasurer of the Board of Directors on 22 August 1986 when the Board applied for status of nonprofit corporation. Names of other incorporators included Emmett Wilson, Nona Hood, Kathy Grussing, Patty Greene, Rod Arnzen, Ken Forsmann, Donna Wassmuth, Kim Meyer, Rita Phelps, and Julie Duman. Colleen was also City Clerk for many years, and after a brief absence from operation of the Library, she returned in 2017 to lend her expertise and lead the way to more economical arrangements. We salute you, Colleen, for your prodigious personality and great gift of practicality. “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” Frances has reviewed Ann Patchett’s 2019 book, The Dutch House, a recent hardcover addition to the Library collection: “This novel, set in Philadelphia, slowly revealing the people and relationships between them, is told through the younger brother’s perspective of a lonely life with his brainy older sister. The book’s plot takes backstage to the rich details of life in and around what is called the Dutch House. With keen insight, the book explores the characters’ inner minds and ideas of what makes a family. The author was a 2020 finalist of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for this novel.” Ms. Patchett has published more than ten books; she also co-founded Nashville’s famous independent bookstore, Parnassus Books. Monday 6 October is Child Health Day and Full Harvest Moon. Thursday 9 October is Leif Erikson Day. Next week, we’ll have complete Library statistics for September. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to learn from and respond to change; although willing to change, we know that our mission will always be serving the literary needs of our communities. Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. Volunteers are ALWAYS welcome! Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service. Thank you all! | COTTONWOOD
