Lady Patriots win at Highland
The St. John Bosco Lady Patriots picked up a league win at Highland Monday, Sept. 22 by set scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20. Catherine Beckman makes a pass as Maggie Black looks on in the St. John Bosco match at Highland last week.
Highland scored the first point then missed a serve. Miah Mager then served 6 straight for a 7-1 lead as Savannah Perrin scored 5 straight kills before Mager served an ace to make it 7-1.
5 of the next 6 points were sideouts with a kill by Madeline Wassmuth being the only point scored while serving.
Catherine Beckman scored a kill to make it 11-5 then Catherine Seubert served an ace for a 12-5 lead. After 2 sideouts, Beckman served an ace to make it 14-6.
Highland scored later on to cut the lead to 17-10 but on that played Perrin rolled her ankle and had to be helped off the floor. The Patriots were able to build a 23-13 lead but then saw Highland score 4 straight before Cece Remacle score a kill to get to set point at 24-17.
A net violation gave Highland back the serve but a hitting error by the Huskies gave St. John Bosco the win.
In the second set the Patriots had to shuffle their lineup as they moved Seubert to Perrin’s middle blocker position and put Maggie Black into Seubert’s usual spot.
The Patriots were able to take early 4-3 and 5-4 leads. Highland scored 3 straight to take a 5-7 lead but Bosco fought back and led 11-9 after 2 aces by Wassmuth.
At 12-10 Highland scored a sideout and added 5 more points to take a 12-16 lead. The Patriots were unable to get any closer than 2 at 14-16, the rest of the set as Highland evened the match at 1 set each.
After getting her ankle taped and trying to walk off the injury, Perrin was able to return to the lineup for the third set.
Highland took the early lead but a kill by Wassmuth tied it at 4-4 and Perrin then served 4 straight, 3 of them aces, for an 8-4 lead.
Highland answered with 5 straight to retake the lead and after Wassmuth scored a kill to tie it at 9, Highland scored a sideout and built a 12-16 lead. A kill by Perrin ended their run and Mager then served the Patriots back into the lead. 3 straight kills by Perrin and an ace by Mager made it 17-16.
Highland again answered and took back the lead. The Patriots tied it at 19 and 20 but each time Highland answered. A bad serve by Highland tied it at 21 and Seubert then served an ace to put the Patriots on top.
Highland scored 2 straight but Mager scored a kill to tie it at 23 and Beckman then served 2 aces to give the Patriots the set and a 2 sets to 1 lead.
In the fourth set Highland bricked the opening serve and Remacle then served 2 aces for a 3-0 lead. After a sideout put Highland on the board, Perrin scored a sideout kill and Mager served 2 aces for a 6-1 lead.
Highland scored another sideout but a kill by Perrin sent her to the service line for 4 straight and an 11-2 lead. Remacle, Seubert, Beckman and Wassmuth each scored a kill in that run.
Highland then scored 9 of the next 10 points to cut their deficit to 12-11. A back row kill by Mager and a kill by Beckman made it 14-11.
The lead stayed between 2 and 3 points until Highland scored to pull within 1 at 19-18. Beckman and Seubert each scored a kill to push the lead back to 3 at 21-18.
At 22-20, Seubert scored a kill on a bump and Beckman then served out the match. She served an ace to get to match point and Perrin then scored the match-winning kill.
Despite missing more than a set of play, Perrin wound up lading the team in kills with 18 and added 5 aces. Seubert had 9 kill and 4 aces. Wassmuth had 7 kills, 13 assists and 2 aces. Remacle had 4 kills, 24 assists and 3 aces. Mager had 4 kills, 2 assist and 6 aces. Beckman had 4 kills, 2 assists and 4 aces. Black had 2 kills and 1 ace.
With the win the Patriots improve to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in league play.
The JV teams split their two games 25-22, 18-25.
The Patriots took a 7-4 lead on an ace by Anna Mae Cummings. Highland then responded with 4 straight to take the lead. Highland led 9-14 when they missed  a serve Wassmuth then served 3 straight including 2 aces to cut the lead to 13-14.
Bosco was able to tie the game at 16, 19, 20 and 21 but each time Highland would retake the lead. Finally Highland bricked a serve to make it 22-22 and Wassmuth then served out the set. Beckman scored a kill, Wassmuth served an ace and Cummings then scored the set winning kill.
In the second set Bosco led 6-4 after 2 aces by Beckman but then Highland scored 5 straight points to take the lead. Bosco got within 1 on an ace by Cummings but Highland then scored 4 straight to take a 5 points lead at 8-13.
Bosco was unable to get any closer than 2 at 12-14 the rest of the way.
Their final push got them within 2 at 18-21 after an ace by Beckman but Highland then scored a sideout and served out the set.
Due to limited numbers for the Patriots they did not play a tie-breaking set.
