From the Police Chief
We have had several residents near the
north end of Lewiston Street complaining about the speed of cars coming
into town, oftentimes well over the posted 25 miles per hour speed
limit. Lewiston Street comes into Cottonwood from Cottonwood
Butte Road, on the northwest corner of town, and leads down past the
hospital to Main St. While we have been trying to work with the public, to get folks to slow down, we realize that we cannot be there 24/7. We have also asked the Idaho County Sheriff's Office with assistance having their Deputies work traffic in that area if they are around. So, what CPD will do is traffic stops...LOTS of traffic stops. Traffic stops at varied times and locations with occasional pop up times that folks won't expect. Traffic stops for very small violations of the posted speed limits. Lots of stops. We have also encouraged the citizens in the area to sign citations, take photos, get license plate numbers and help us convince the traveling public that this is a residential area, there are kids playing there, and cars need to slow down. Just so we are very clear with everyone, here are the rules Cottonwood PD will be working under. We will stop anyone going over 25 mph (the posted limit): 0-5 mph over (25-30) Officer Discretion of citation, written or verbal warning 5-10 mph over (30-35)--minimum written warning, Officer Discretion if citation or not 10 or more (35 and up)--Mandatory citation, minimum is $90 fine, depending on speed could be Misdemeanor charge of Reckless Driving. Folks, we need everyone to slow down. I realize this is a nice wide smooth street, but it is also a residential street. No one would want the trauma of a young child being hit because someone was wanting to get home a few seconds sooner. Slow down, we need to keep everyone safe. Terry Cochran
