Pirates win big on Senior Night
All 4 seniors found their way into the end zone on Senior Night as the Prairie football team clobbered Potlatch 70-26 Friday, Oct. 9 at Cottonwood. Normally the center, senior Ashton Martin got the chance to carry the ball on a 2-point attempt and scored. At right is Corbyn Tacke.
Kade Quintal, Payton Stamper, Ashton Martin and Lane Mader were honored before the game with their families. During the game Quintal and Stamper each scored touchdowns on offense. After one of the later touchdowns, Martin, normally the center, was given the ball on a 2-point conversion and scored. Mader, a lineman on both offense and defense, scored on a scoop and score where he picked up a Potlatch fumble and went 80 yards for a touchdown.
For the 8th straight time this season, Prairie received the opening kickoff as Potlatch won the toss but deferred. Prairie started deep in their own territory after a penalty on the kickoff return set them back to their own 8. On second and 8, Quintal ran a keeper and ripped off his second longest run of the year as he went 73 yards to the Logger 17. His longest was a 94 yarder 2 weeks ago against Kamiah. On the next play Stamper burst through the middle for 17 yards and the game’s first touchdown. The 2-point try failed as Prairie took a 6-0 lead.
Potlatch was forced to punt on their first possession when Trajan Elven broke through the line and batted down a third and 11 pass. Prairie took over on the Logger 26 after Cooper Riener’s 14 yard punt return.
On third and 4 at the 20, Quintal found Isaiah Warren open in the end zone for a 20 yard scoring play. Quintal then passed to Riener for the 2-pointer and a 14-0 lead.
Potlatch was able to move to the Prairie 29 on their next possession where they faced fourth and 1. Quarterback Tayson Pollock fumbled the snap and Prairie took over at their own 31.
Prairie put together a 7 play drive that was 6 runs and 1 incomplete pass. Stamper ripped off runs of 15, 26 and 16 yards on the drive to set up first and goal at the 10. Quintal then faked to Stamper on a crossbuck and handed to Marshall Weber, who went 10 yards untouched for the touchdown. Quintal then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 22-0.
Potlatch got on the board on their next possession. They changed quarterbacks to Trey Magallon and he wound up passing for 56 yards to Brody Mitchell for the touchdown. The 2-point try failed, cutting their deficit to 22-6.
Potlatch then attempted and recovered an onside kick at the Prairie 45. On the next play Magallon again passed to Mitchell for a touchdown. The 2-point run was stopped, making it 22-12. The Loggers had scored twice within 12 seconds.
They tried another onside kick but Rowan Elven recovered for Prairie at the Prairie 49. On third and 4 at the 43, Quintal passed to Warren who broke several tackles and picked up 31 yards to the 12. 3 plays later Weber scored his second touchdown on a 2 yard run up the middle. Quintal added the 2-point run to make it 30-12.
Potlatch took over after the kickoff at their own 39. Martin sacked Magallon for a 9 yard loss on first down. On second down Magallon tried to go downfield again and Riener intercepted the pass at the 37 and took it all the way to the 2 where he got knocked out of bounds. Stamper scored on the next play when he took a pitch around right end. Quintal passed to Riener for the 2-pointer to make it 38-12.
Potlatch took over at their own 26 after the kickoff and proceeded to go backwards. Martin sacked Magallon for a 3 yard loss. Potlatch was called for a false start. Mader, Martin and Riener combined to tackle a Potlatch runner for an 11 yard loss to set them back to their own 7. An incomplete pass set up fourth down. Prairie rushed the punter and he shanked it. It landed on about the 3 and bounced back toward the goal line, going out of bounds inside the 1 yard line.
Quintal scored on the next play. Stamper ran in the 2-pointer to make it 46-12.
Potlatch started their next possession at the 18. On second and 9, the ball was snapped over the quarterback’s head. He chased it into the end zone and then kicked it out the back to keep Prairie from scoring a touchdown instead of a safety. That made it 48-12.
Potlatch then had to kick off from the 10 instead of the 20 because of the illegal kick.
Lane Mader, 1, carries the ball after picking up a Potlatch fumble. He went 80 yards for a touchdown. Leading the way is Sam Rehder with Ashton Martin following.Prairie took over at the Potlatch 37. Prairie picked up a first down thanks in part to an encroachment penalty on Potlatch that turned a fourth and 6 into a fourth and 1. Stamper gained 4 to get the first down. Quintal then missed on 3 straight passes and then was sacked on fourth down as Potlatch took over at their own 40.
The Loggers were unable to move the ball and Prairie took over on downs at the 42. A holding penalty called back a big run by Stamper. On second and 8 from the 42, Quintal passed downfield to Riener, who had to come back for the underthrown ball. Riener caught the ball at about the 10 and took it into the end zone. The 2-point run came up short as Prairie now led 54-12 with 38 seconds left in the half.
Potlatch got a 45 yard return on the kickoff, setting them up at the Prairie 40. Pollock went back in at quarter and completed 3 of 5 passes for the 40 yards. Connor Carpenter caught a 10 yard pass for the touchdown on the last play of the quarter. Pollock passed to Mitchell for the 2-pointer to make it 54-20 at halftime.
Potlatch then received the second half kickoff and picked up a first down before Pollock fumbled at the Prairie 46. Trajan Elven recovered at the 45.
Weber picked up 16 on first down. Two runs by Stamper net 2 yards then Quintal tossed a screen pass to the right to Stamper who wound up going 37 yards for a touchdown. Prairie then ran the 2-point play where Martin got to play tailback and scored the 2-pointer to make it 62-20 with 5:27 left in the third quarter. That invoked the running clock mercy rule for the remainder of the game.
Potlatch got a big kickoff return from Carpenter on a reverse, going 43 yards to the Prairie 25. The Loggers picked up a first down on a scramble by Pollock with Prairie getting a late hit penalty that set up first and goal at the 8. On the next play Prairie was called for pass interference setting up first and goal at the 6. Pollock then fumbled the ball and it headed backwards to where Mader picked it up at the 20 and went 80 yards for a defensive touchdown as time expired in the third quarter. Weber ran in the 2-pointer to make it 70-20 as time expired in the third quarter.
