To the Library and Beyond Prairie Community Library, Inc. – Your nonprofit, all volunteer source. Joan Brown is retired from the Forest Service, and in 2023, she began volunteering at Prairie Community Library. Later that year, when our Library was flooded, her experience as a U.S. Army officer became evident as she cleverly marshalled our resources to manage each challenging situation. Joan is not merely a pragmatist, as all who have enjoyed visiting with her have learned. Joan is currently the librarian on Thursdays (10 AM – 5:30 PM); she has also contributed 60 book reviews to this column. Joan has reviewed the 2018 book, Racing Winter On the Pacific Crest Trail, by Kyle Rohrig. “This is a great book for people who enjoy hiking and seeing the backcountry in these three western states.” In 2016, Mr. Rohrig backpacked his way 2,651 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, from the Mexican border in California to the Canadian border in Washington state. The author described many aspects of the hike, including 703 miles thru the California desert, 314 miles in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite National Park, 674 miles across northern California, 455 miles across Oregon and 505 miles across Washington state. His small 18-pound dog accompanied him for many miles. Mr. Rohrig described people he met, his camping arrangements, his food and meals as well as trips to various towns for resupplying and rest days. The author described the varied terrain, especially the many mountain passages he traversed on his way. The entire trip took the author 173 days, from April 14 through October 5. Tuesday 21 October marks 110 years since the first transatlantic radio voice message was made by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company from Virginia to Paris. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to always exhibit a culture of customer service, service worthy of the many volunteers who have spent great portions of their lives making this Library a service to all. Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Volunteering can improve our physical and mental health.” Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service. Thank you all! | COTTONWOOD
