To the Library and Beyond
The month of October continues to pass quickly!  We continue to enjoy our Tuesday morning kids’ story times with our young preschool kids from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.  Bring your young child in and listen to some great stories and music about autumn, the cool weather, Halloween, and other season-related topics.
Don’t forget that the library is having a pumpkin decorating contest late this month in time for Halloween.  Please do not carve a pumpkin, as the contest is for decorating one with paint or other items.  Everyone is welcome to participate, and prizes will be awarded for the most creative design, the spookiest one, and the most technical one.  The pumpkin submissions are due in the library by October 27th.  So, have fun decorating, and bring your pumpkins in!
Joan’s book review this week is for the book titled “The Bears and I”.  This book is located in the Young Adult section of the library.  It is the true story of the author’s three years in the north woods of British Columbia, Canada.  He stayed in a cabin near the shore of Babine Lake, in the middle part of British Columbia.  He discovered 3 young bear cubs that had been orphaned and decided to raise them to adulthood.  Initially, he fed them but later taught them and accompanied them on forage hunts for their food.  He claimed to not want to domesticate them; however, he allowed the cubs to sleep with him each night in his cabin.  Eventually he moved to a more remote location and took the cubs with him.  He raised them for 3 years and they became very attached to him, as he was their substitute mother.  Finally, 2 of the full-grown bears were shot and killed by hunters.  The author sent the third bear with a friend, who took it further into the backcountry and released it into the wild.  At this time the author, an American, returned to his home in California.  This is a very interesting book demonstrating the great affection between the author and the bears as they grew to maturity and became acclimated to the wild backcountry of British Columbia, Canada.
This latest book review demonstrates how interesting and enjoyable just one book in our library’s collection of nonfiction books is!  We have many, many other interesting nonfiction books, as well as a great selection of fiction for adults, young adults, juveniles, younger readers, and preschoolers. Come on in and take a look!
