To the Library and Beyond
Prairie Community Library, Inc. – Your nonprofit, all volunteer source.
This week we celebrate Frances Conklin, our newest Director and most enthusiastic volunteer.  You can see that Frances is a professional in her choice of activities.  She has provided our patrons and friends with cultural events.  Many friends turned out for Tobe Finch’s Farm-to-table discussion, and a great crowd enjoyed the Picnic with the Concert in the Park.  With her experience operating Dog Bark Park, Frances is an exceptional organizer.  She was the first to suggest we need to thank our public for their donations and participation in the Library’s 40-Year anniversary events.  Frances can tell you thatVolunteering helps us meet and make new friends.”  Frances also updates the Library’s Facebook page; check us out – Facebook, Prairie Community Library.
Joan has reviewed the 2014 book, Frozen In Time, by Mitchell Zuckoff.  “This is a thrilling book about survival in arctic conditions.”  Mr. Zuckoff tells this story of recovery operations for planes and persons that went missing on Greenland during WWII.  Two separate planes crashed on the icecap: One, a B-17 bomber, and the other a US Coast Guard plane searching for the B-17.  Both crashes happened during the winter of 1942-43.  The author describes the crashes and how the men from the B-17 plane survived on the ice for 5 months before finally being rescued.  Mr. Zuckoff joined an expedition to Greenland in 2012; they located the Coast Guard plane crash-site and small parts of the plane’s debris, which were buried under 35 feet of ice.  The author describes the frigid winter conditions and the difficulties of travelling on the ice while avoiding many deep and dangerous crevasses.
As we cruise through the last week of October, we want to take time to especially thank ALL the volunteers who have given so much of their precious time and treasures to enrich the health, operation, and longevity of Prairie Community Library.  We also thank the many people who have already graciously supported the Library in many ways, large and small.
Friday, October 31 is Halloween: To celebrate Halloween we want to thank you for your many thoughtful donations.  We assure you that your donations are greatly appreciated as they provide for daily operations and support a growing fund for a brighter future.
The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library are committed to our mission of supplying the literary needs of our communities to the greatest extent possible for a small, independent library.
Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com.  “Volunteering provides opportunities to learn and grow.”  Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
