Pirates swamped at Kendrick
On Friday, Oct. 24, the Prairie Pirates traveled to Kendrick and found out why Kendrick is the #1 rated team in the state of Idaho and the #2 ranked 8-man football team in theCooper Riener crosses the goal line with Prairie’s only touchdown at Kendrick. The Tigers completely shut down Prairie’s running game as the Pirates had a net -4 yards rushing in 22 attempts.
The Pirates received the opening kickoff and their only gain in their first 3 plays was an 8 yard pass from Kade Quintal to Levi McElroy.
Quintal tried a quick kick on fourth down at their own 41 and Kendrick blocked it, recovering at the Prairie 35. The Tigers needed just 1 play to score as Maddox Kirkland passed to Ralli Roetcisoender for the touchdown. Tanner Clemenhagen ran in the 2-pointer.
Prairie started their second possession at their 25 and netted -1 yard on 3 plays. McElroy’s punt went 25 yards to the 49. Kendrick again needed just 1 play to score as Kirkland passed to Cade Silflow for 49 yards. Clemenhagen again ran in the 2-pointer for a 0-16 lead.
On Prairie’s third possession they finally picked up a first down as Quintal passed to Payton Stamper for 24 yards to move the ball across the 50 to the Kendrick 40. Quintal then passed to Chris Schumacher for 11 yards and another first down at the 29. A pass to Levi Gehring moved the ball to the 22. Prairie then tried to run the ball and Quintal’s quarterback sneak on fourth and 2 was stopped 1 yard short.
Kendrick then ran their third play from scrimmage and scored their third touchdown as Clemenhagen went 80 yards for the score. Silflow caught the 2-point pass from Kirkland to make it 0-24.
Kendrick’s defense scored their fourth touchdown. Gehring gained 6 yards on first down but a fumble on second down led to a 4 yard loss. Quintal’s third down pass was intercepted by Orion Stewart at the Prairie 24 and returned to the end zone for a touchdown. Roetcisoender caught the 2-point pass to make it 0-32.
Another interception ended Prairie’s next possession as Kolt Koepp intercepted at the Prairie 15. He fumbled and then recovered at the 11. Kendrick needed 2 plays to score this time as a pass covered 8 yards before Clemenhagen scored from the 3. The 2-point pass failed leaving the Tigers with a 0-38 lead with 1:05 still left in the first quarter.
Prairie’s next possession also ended in a turnover, this time on a fumble with Kendrick taking over at the Prairie 15.
On the second play of the second quarter, Clemenhagen scored from the 14 and then added the 2-pointer for a 0-46 lead.
On Prairie’s next possession, Kendrick was called for roughing the kicker on fourth down, giving Prairie a first down at the 36. Quintal missed on 3 of 4 pass attempts with the only completion going to Gehring for 3 yards as Kendrick took over on downs at the Prairie 39.
Pass plays of 16 and 21 yards gave Kendrick a first and goal at the 2. Roetcisoender scored on the next play and Nathan Tweit ran in the 2-pointer for a 0-54 lead.
Another pick six ended Prairie’s next possession as Tweit intercepted at the Prairie 22 and ran it into the end zone. Clemenhagen ran in the 2-pointer for a 0-62 lead.
Prairie fumbled the ball away on their next possession at their own 37. This time Kendrick needed 6 plays to score with Clemenhagen scoring on a 15 yard run. Kendrick added the 2-pointer for a 0-70 lead with 3:45 left in the first half.
On Prairie’s final possession of the half they converted a fourth and 9 when Quintal passed to McElroy on a slant for 15 yards. After a 6 yard pass to Gehring that set up a third and 4, Kendrick intercepted again at their own 25.
A 38 yard run by backup quarterback Hank Heimgartner turned out to be the final play of the half.
Prairie tried an onside kick to open the second half but Kendrick recovered at the 50. On a pass play, Kendrick fumbled and Gehring recovered at the Prairie 41.
Quintal passed to Cooper Riner for 11 yards and a first down but was intercepted for the fifth time on the next play as Kendrick took over at their own 20.
Kendrick put their JV offense on the field and they converted a fourth and 2 and then 3 plays later Heimgartner broke loose for a 66 yard scoring play. They added the 2-pointer for a 0-78 lead.
Prairie took over at their own 20 and picked up a first down on a 25 yard screen pass from Quintal to Gehring. Schumacher then had Prairie’s longest run of the game at 11 yards. On the next play Quintal found Riener open down the right side for a 41 yard touchdown. Isaiah Warren ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-78.
That came with 1:16 left in the third quarter and was Prairie’s final offensive play of the game.
Kendrick took over at their own 25 after the kickoff and ground out a 17 play drive that covered 70 yards before running a kneel down to run out the game clock. Prairie had 3 penalties that helped Kendrick keep the ball.
Schumacher was Prairie’s only runner with positive yardage as he had 13 yards on 3 carries.
Quintal completed 10 of 24 passes with 5 interceptions for 151 yards. Gehring caught 4 for 41 yards. Riener caught 2 for 52 and a touchdown. McElroy caught 2 for 23. Stamper caught 1 for 24 and Schumacher caught 1 for 11 yards.
Kendrick had 285 yards rushing on 30 attempts. Clemenhagen had 4 carries for 112 yards and 4 touchdowns. Heimgartner had 13 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown.
Kirkland completed 6 of 8 passes for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns. Heimgartner completed 3 of 6 passes for 31 yards.
Defensively Schumacher had 7 solo tackles and 3 assists. Stamper had 3 solos and 3 assists. Lane Mader had 4 solos. Gehring had 3 solos and a fumble recovery. McElroy had 3 solos. Sam Rehder had 2 solos. Trajan Elven and Warren each had 1 solo and 1 assist. Riener, Max Rehder, Tate Uhlenkott and Carson Lockart each had 1 solo. Ben Secrest had 1 assist.
Prairie finishes their regular season with a record of 6-3, 3-3 in league play. They will host Valley this Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. in a first round state playoff game. They beat Valley 38-30 earlier this season at New Plymouth.
