To the Library and Beyond Prairie Community Library, Inc. – Your nonprofit, all volunteer source! Your library has been adding lots of books and audio books to our shelves for several months now, thanks to patrons & friends donations. Here’s a brief rundown of some of this week’s children’s books: Several volumes of the classic Nancy Drew mystery series that has become popular again; Four titles about the US Government from the WHO Headquarters series: What is the Constitution, What is the Declaration of Independence, What Was Ellis Island, What is the Statue of Liberty; And a short book with an Idaho connection called Baseball Saved Us which is about Japanese Americans held in the Minidoka internment camp in southern Idaho. It is an uplifting story of a young boy who overcame bullying despite his small size and ethnicity by learning to play baseball in the community-built field at the camp. We also have Thanksgiving books on display ready for quick checkout as well, including a 1960’s delicately beautiful pop-up book. Joan’s 60th book review was the 1972 volume, The Silence Of the North, by Olive A. Fredrickson. “This is a fascinating tale of life in the ‘early days’ in a very remote location with few people.” In this autobiography, Ms. Fredrickson related many stories of her family’s life in the wilderness of Northwest British Columbia, Canada from 1910 to the 1950s. She described her girlhood in that area, her marriage, and her life as a trapper’s wife; she portrays her experience as a laundress in a mining camp. Through-out the book, she depicted many encounters with native wildlife involving moose, wolves, and grizzly bears. Pat G. gives us “Thumbs Up” for The Longhorn Feud by Max Brand, Some More Horse Tradin’ by Ben K. Green, Man In Black by Barbara Mandrell, and Freckles and other works by Gene Stratton Porter. November is Native American Heritage Month and National Scholarship Month. We also extend a hearty thanks to each or our volunteers who donate their time and talent to our Library; you are golden!!! We know that “What we do has far greater impact than what we say.” We wish our many patrons and every resident of our communities all the blessings of a cheerful Thanksgiving Day on Thursday 27 November. And as we celebrate Thanksgiving Day we want to express our grateful thanks for your many thoughtful donations. We assure you that your contributions are deeply appreciated as they provide for daily operations and support a growing fund for a brighter future. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library are committed to adapting to the changes you need in our service to you.
