Pirates fall at Lapwai
An undermanned Prairie football team played Lapwai tough into the second quarter then wore down and the Wildcats pulled away for a 0-50 win at Lapwai Friday, Sept. 17.Ryan Daly runs the ball against Lapwai.
The game was called on the 45-point mercy rule with 11:03 left in the fourth quarter.
Prairie stopped Lapwai’s first scoring threat when Jacob Holthaus intercepted a pass at the Prairie 1-yard line.
Prairie couldn’t move the ball and punted away to Lapwai with the Wildcats taking over at the Prairie 33. This time the Wildcats did score to take a 0-6 lead.
Prairie appeared headed for a tie score as they put together a couple of first downs, mostly on running plays with Kelby Wilson doing most of the ballcarrying. The drive stalled out at the 50 though and Prairie punted to the Lapwai 22.
Lapwai moved the ball well again but Daniel Sigler forced a fumble with Holthaus recovering at the Prairie 16 to stop another threat.
Prairie moved out to the 32 before punting again and the defense held again thanks to several Lapwai penalties. One penalty called back a long Lapwai touchdown as the Wildcats were holding on the play.
Unfortunately that wasn’t the case on Lapwai’s next possession as they had a 65 yard run for a touchdown.
A holding penalty on the Pirates killed their next possession, which featured a 14-yard run by Mat Forsmann.
The punt was then blocked giving Lapwai the ball at the Prairie 24.
Forsmann intercepted a pass at the 1 to stop that scoring threat but then fumbled the ball right back to Lapwai on the next play, giving Lapwai the ball at the Prairie 9 yard line.

It looked like Lapwai had scored another touchdown as the half ended but the runner stepped out at the 33.
The third quarter saw Lapwai score again the first time they got the ball.
On the Wildcats second possession Prairie forced a punt.
Prairie picked up a first down when Lapwai was called for a late hit on a run by Wilson, but were again forced to punt.
Lapwai’s returner appeared headed for a touchdown but the ball got knocked loose and Forsmann recovered for the Pirates at the Prairie 20.
Again the Pirates couldn’t cash in on their good fortune as they fumble the ball right back on the next play.
Lapwai scored again to make it 0-38.
Prairie then put together their best penetration of the night as they picked up a first down on pass interference and added another on a pair of runs by Wilson.
They came up short on fourth and 1 at the Lapwai 24 and turned the ball over on downs.
Two plays later Lapwai scored to make it 0-44. The game might have ended there but Lapwai tried to kick the extra point and it missed.
Lapwai then squibbed the kickoff and the Prairie front line apparently didn’t realize it was a live ball and Lapwai recovered on the Prairie 40. 3 plays later Lapwai scored the game-ending touchdown.
Prairie managed just 74 yards of offense in the game and 6 first downs.Prairie defenders double team a Lapwai runner.
They had 48 yards rushing with Wilson picking up 37 yards on 17 carries. Ryan Daley added 14 yards on 5 carries and Forsmann had 4 yards on 13 carries. Forsmann actually had 40 yards on 7 running plays but he was sacked 6 times for 36 yards in losses.
Forsmann completed 5 of 12 passes for 26 yards. Wilson caught 2 passes for 12 yards, Philip Henry 1 for 8 and James Hood 1 for 6.
Lapwai totaled 449 yards, 372 on the ground. Andy Jones had the bulk of them with 234 yards on 10 carries. Lapwai passers completed 4 of 8 passes with 2 interceptions for 77 yards.
On defense Wilson had 6 assists and 2 solo tackles. Hood had 4 solo tackles. Sigler had 3 assists, 2 solos and a forced fumble. Forsmann had 2 assists, 2 solos, a fumble recovery and an interception. Daley had 3 assists and a solo. Brandon Johnson had 3 assists. Holthaus had 2 assists, 1 fumble recovery and an interception. Nathan Whitaker had 2 assists, 2 solos and a sack.
The Pirates record falls to 0-2 in league and 0-3 overall. Their next game is Homecoming, this Friday against Kendrick at 7 p.m.
