Pirates lose to Kendrick
The Prairie football team continued their tough season as they were beaten by Kendrick 8-56 in the Pirates’ Homecoming game Friday, Sept. 17.James Hood heads for the endzone on a 77 yard pass play for Prairie's only score.
The game started out like the Homecoming ceremonies might be held after the game was over as Kendrick scored the first 4 times they had the ball, rolling to a 0-28 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Kendrick went to their backups though in the second quarter and it was still 0-28 at the half.
The Pirates’ offense struggled as they managed just 2 first downs in the first half, both right at the end of the first quarter.
On the third play of the second quarter Prairie lost their starting quarterback as Mat Forsmann was injured on a 3 yard run.
Kelby Wilson took over at quarterback and struggled to adjust the rest of the half.
In the third quarter Wilson started finding his receivers and had a pair of big completions, 29 yards to Ryan Osterbuhr and 23 yards to Jacob Holthaus on the Pirates first possession of the half.
Prairie got as far as the Kendrick 25 but a high snap in shotgun formation killed the drive.
On Prairie’s next possession the Pirates faced a second and 10 at their own 23. James Hood ran a little inside slant pattern and Wilson threw the ball only about 5 yards. Hood caught the pass off his shoetops and broke a couple of tackles before breaking into the clear at about the 35 yard line. He then outran the defenders to the end zone for a 77 yard scoring play.
Jacob Holthaus makes a catch along the visitor's sideline.Wilson passed to Phil Henry for the 2-pointer to make the score 8-36 at that time.
Kendrick put their starters back in on offense and scored the next 3 times they had the ball to end the game on the 45-point mercy rule with 9:55 left in the fourth quarter.
Wilson wound up completed 7 of 14 pass attempts with 1 interception, for 152 yards. Forsmann was 2 for 7 while he was in there for 9 yards/
Henry caught 4 passes for 18 yards while Hood caught 2 for 75 yards. Osterbuhr caught 1 for 29, Holthaus 1 for 23 and Ryan Daly 1 for 16 yards.
The Pirates’ running attack was totally shut down as they had minus 27 yards on 20 attempts. A pair of high center snaps cost them 40 of those yards with  four  sacks contributing another 35 yards in losses.
Daly  he gained 27 yards on 6 carries while Forsmann had 9 yards on 4 carries with a 20 yard run on a quarterback sneak out of a spread formation as the team’s longest run of the game.
Kendrick had 2 runners with at least 114 yards as they gained 337 yards rushing and added another 118 yards passing. Drew Witt gained 188 yards on 7 carries while Casey Lohman added 114 yards on 8 carries.
Wilson was Prairie’s leading tackler with 3 solo and 6 assisted tackles. Henry had 2 solos and 5 assists. Forsmann and Clark Tacke each had 1 solo and 4 assists. Hood had 2 solos and 3 assists. Osterbuhr had 2 solos and 2 assists. Daniel Sigler had 3 assists.  Nathan Whitaker had 1 solo tackle and a fumble recovery.Kelby Wilson,42, makes a handoff to Ryan Daly.
Whitaker was another player who left the game with an injury as he took a hard tackle on a kickoff return.
The Pirates fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in league play. They get a week off to try and heal up before traveling  on October 8 to play Lewis County. That game is tentatively set for 4 p.m. at the Nezperce field. That team played their September home games at Highland and will play their October home games at Nezperce.
