Hospitals to host breast cancer awareness open house
St. Mary’s Hospital Cottonwood Clinic will host Shelly Janke, RN, a representative of the Women’s Health Check program at an Open House on October 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.
She will explain the program which provides free annual mammograms and pap smears to qualified women who are over the age of 50, have no insurance and have a limited income.
“Mammograms are very important in helping detect breast cancer in its early stages,” said Janke.  “The earlier breast cancer is identified the more treatment options are available and the better the possible outcome.”
According to Janke, some women under the age of 50 may also qualify.  She will have printed materials available and can answer questions about the program.
During the month of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Kamiah Medical Clinic, the Cottonwood Clinic and the Clearwater Valley Hospital Orofino clinic are sponsoring displays with free handouts and informational materials.
“We want to encourage women to have regular mammograms and pap smears so any problems can be identified early on,” said Jeanette Gorman, Community Relations Coordinator.  “We have gathered information from a variety of sources to raise awareness and want to share it with the people in the area.”
The information and handouts are available during clinic business hours, Monday through Friday.  For more information about the Women’s Health Check Program, call 1.877.285.6700.  For more information about the displays and printed material, call the Cottonwood clinic, 962.3267.
