score twice against Genesee
The Prairie football team suffered another lopsided loss but were able to score a pair of touchdowns in a 14-60 loss to Genesee at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 15.
Genesee scored their first touchdown before their offense got on the field as they stopped the Pirates and then returned the punt for 72 yards and a score.
Genesee’s offense was only on the field for 6 plays in the first quarter but scored 4 touchdowns and the defense added another with an interception return for a touchdown as the Bulldogs built a 0-46 lead by the end of the quarter.
Prairie missed on a chance to score on their second possession as Phil Henry got open down the right sideline but the pass missed. If the pass had connected Henry likely would have scored as he was nearly 10 yards behind anyone on the Genesee defense.
Genesee went to backups in the second quarter and the Prairie defense stopped them at the 25 on downs.
Eric Lerandeau then picked up 27 yards on a run over right tackle, Prairie’s biggest gainer on a running play this season.
A pass interference penalty gave Prairie another first down deep in Genesee territory.
3 plays later Henry went up for a high lob pass and outfought the defender for a 23 yard gain to the Genesee 10 yard line.
On the next play Lerandeau again went over right tackle for a 10-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 6-46 and allow the teams to come out to play after the half.
In the third quarter Kelby Wilson had a pair of passes intercepted but after both Prairie got the ball back on fumble recoveries with Jacob Holthaus coming up with the first recovery and Henry the second.
Two plays after the second fumble recovery Wilson and Henry connected on the play that misfired in the first quarter and it resulted in a 52 yard scoring play. Henry got behind the defense and caught the pass at about the Genesee 35 and took it the rest of the way for the touchdown. Lerandeau ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 14-46.
Genesee then put their first unit back in the game and they scored on their next 2 possessions to end the game with 5:27 left in the third quarter on the 45-point mercy rule.
