Pirates score twice against Genesee
The Prairie football team suffered another lopsided loss but were able to score a pair of touchdowns in a 14-60 loss to Genesee at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 15.Eric Lerandeau heads for the end zone and Prairie's first TD of the game.
Genesee scored their first touchdown before their offense got on the field as they stopped the Pirates and then returned the punt for 72 yards and a score.
Genesee’s offense was only on the field for 6 plays in the first quarter but scored 4 touchdowns and the defense added another with an interception return for a touchdown as the Bulldogs built a 0-46 lead by the end of the quarter.
Prairie missed on a chance to score on their second possession as Phil Henry got open down the right sideline but the pass missed. If the pass had connected Henry likely would have scored as he was nearly 10 yards behind anyone on the Genesee defense.
Genesee went to backups in the second quarter and the Prairie defense stopped them at the 25 on downs.
Eric Lerandeau then picked up 27 yards on a run over right tackle, Prairie’s biggest gainer on a running play this season.
A pass interference penalty gave Prairie another first down deep in Genesee territory.
3 plays later Henry went up for a high lob pass and outfought the defender for a 23 yard gain to the Genesee 10 yard line.
On the next play Lerandeau again went over right tackle for a 10-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 6-46 and allow the teams to come out to play after the half.
In the third quarter Kelby Wilson had a pair of passes intercepted but after both Prairie got the ball back on fumble recoveries with Jacob Holthaus coming up with the first recovery and Henry the second.
Two plays after the second fumble recovery Wilson and Henry connected on the play that misfired in the first quarter and it resulted in a 52 yard scoring play. Henry got behind the defense and caught the pass at about the Genesee 35 and took it the rest of the way for the touchdown. Lerandeau ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 14-46.
Genesee then put their first unit back in the game and they scored on their next 2 possessions to end the game with 5:27 left in the third quarter on the 45-point mercy rule.
Lerandeau wound up with 57 yards on 9 carries for the Pirates. The Pirates totaled just 34 yards rushing due to 3 quarterback sacks.
James Hood makes a tackle.Wilson completed 6 of 21 pass attempts with 3 interceptions for 83 yards. Henry caught 3 passes for 73 yards with James Hood catching 2 for 7 yards and C.J. Rieman caught 1 for 3 yards.
Genesee rolled up 358 yards rushing on 29 attempts with 5 different runners gaining at least 58 yards but no one gaining more than 85.
They tried just 1 pass and completed it for 10 yards.
Defensively Rieman had 3 solo and 5 assisted tackled. Henry had 3 solos, 3 assists and a fumble recovery. Holthaus had 2 solos, 2 assists and a fumble recovery. Hood had 2 solos and 4 assists. Clark Tacke had 1 solo and 4 assists. Wilson had 1 solo, 1 assist and a quarterback sack.
The loss drops the Pirates to 0-6 on the season, 0-5 in league play. This week they travel to Deary.
