Forsmann tosses no-hitter
Mat Forsmann had a dominating performance on the mound as he tossed a 5-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts Friday, April 15 at the Prairie baseball team beat Lewis County 12-0 at Nezperce.
Forsmann struck out the side in the first inning on just 10 pitches and struck out 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced.Mat Forsmann throws a strike.
The second inning saw Lewis County’s only baserunner to get past second. After 2 were out Forsmann gave up a walk and then recorded a strikeout on a pitch in the dirt that got past the catcher allowing the batter to reach and the baserunner to move to third. Forsmann struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Only one Lewis County batter got a ball out of the infield and that was a fly ball to right in the fifth inning that Sean Daly caught easily.
Offensively the Pirates scored in every inning as they were able to end the game after 5 innings on the 10-run rule.
Forsmann started things offensively with a 1-out single and Dan Riener followed with a walk. Chad Arnzen scored both runners with a double to deep left field. If there’d been a fence it likely would’ve been a homer.
In the second inning Phil Henry led off with a single to right and Eric Lerandeau followed with a fly ball to left that went farther than Arnzen’s blast. Lerandeau wound up with just a ground rule double even though he was nearly to third before the ball rolled off the playing field into the marsh. Chris Schumacher scored Henry when his grounder to second went right through the legs of the fielder into right field for an error. Forsmann then scored Lerandeau with a groundout to short.
In the third Daly reached on an error by the shortstop and scored on Henry’s single. Henry went to second on the throw home and when that got away tried for third but was called out on a close play to end the inning.
In the third Lerandeau was walked leading off the inning and Schumacher followed with a single to left. After an out Forsmann singled back up the middle to score Lerandeau. Riener then hit a dribbler down the third base line and beat it out for a single. When the throw got away from the first baseman, Schumacher scored. C.J. Rieman singled to left to score Forsmann and Riener scored when Daly’s grounder went through the third baseman’s legs for an error.
Eric Lerandeau apparently scores on a homer but wound up being sent back to second with a ground-rule double. In the fifth Lewis County quickly got two outs but another error by the third baseman allowed Forsmann to keep the inning alive. Riener then beat out another infield hit and Arnzen singled down the third base line to score Daniel Sigler, who was courtesy running for Forsmann who had tweaked his ankle. Rieman then got a pop fly double to left to score both Riener and Ryan Daly, who pinch ran for Arnzen.
Even after tweaking his ankle, Forsmann went out in the fifth to finish off his no-hitter. He walked two batters in the game and 2 others reached on third strikes that got past the catcher.
In the game Arnzen and Rieman each had a double, single and 3 RBI while Forsmann, Riener and Henry each had 2 singles. Schumacher and Sam Forsmann added a single apiece.
With the win Prairie improves to 2-6 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
