Pirates thumped at Genesee
The Prairie football team ran into a buzzsaw when they faced league favorite Genesee as they lost 58-8 at Genesee Friday, Sept. 9.
The Pirates were down 0-14 before they picked up a first down and trailed 0-22 by the end of the first quarter. It's a fumble!! Danny Riener, center, tries to beat a Genesee player to the ball.
Near the end of the first quarter they put their first sustained drive together as quarterback Mat Forsmann picked up a pair of first downs on running plays of 13 and 17 yards.
His fourth down pass from the Genesee 35 though was intercepted.
Genesee then went on a 93 yard drive for another score and added another on a 70 yard screen pass from Justin Udy to their outstanding running back, Carl Jensen.
Jensen then made it 0-44 with a 62 yard punt return for another touchdown.
Prairie then put on together their only scoring drive.
Forsmann gained 14 yards on a keeper. Danny Riener then added 12 yards on what started as a sweep to the right. He cut it back to the left and picked up the yardage.
Danny Riener gains yardage after cutting back when the sweep to the left was cut off by the defense. Eric Lerandeau, 51, made a block that help spring Riener. That play set up the next one as Riener again took a pitch and headed right. This time though he pulled up and passed downfield to a wide open Jacob Holthaus who was 10 yards behind everybody at about the 20 yard line. Holthaus had to stop and wait for the underthrown pass but still was able to break loose from the defenders for a 47 yard touchdown play.
Forsmann then ran for Prairie’s first 2-point conversion of the season, diving at the pylon for the score.
Genesee came right back with another touchdown to make it 8-52.
Prairie then threatened to score again before half as Holthaus picked up 37 yards on a pass from Forsmann to set Prairie up at the Genesee 23.
Prairie got as far as the 10 before a penalty set them back and the fourth down pass completion to Chris Schumacher came up several yards short.
In the second half Prairie had to kickoff and Genesee never let them see the ball again as they marched downfield for the game-ending score. The 45-point mercy rule was invoked with 10:39 left in the third quarter.Jacob Holthaus gained big yardage on this catch late in the half. Earlier he scored Prairie's only touchdown.
Prairie wound up with just 47 yards rushing with Riener picking up 25 yards on 10 carries and Forsmann 22 yards on 8 carries.
