Pirates lose to Nezperce
Nezperce’s defense and timely 3-point shooting were too much for the Prairie Pirates to handle as they fell to the Indians 57-70 at Cottonwood Tuesday, Dec. 20.Sean Daly sets up for a 3-point attempt against Nezperce.
The Indians jumped out to a 0-6 lead in the game but Prairie fought back to tie the game at 10 by the end of the first quarter as Seth Crane scored 6 and Corey Schaeffer 4.
In the second quarter Nezperce outscored Prairie 3-8 to open the period and hit a pair of 3 pointers late, including a 30 footer that banked in at the buzzer by Jeff Harris, to take a 26-34 halftime lead.
The Pirates scored the first 4 points of the third quarter to cut the lead in half but a basket a pair of 3-pointers by the Indians’ Corbin Lunders quickly pushed the lead to 12 points.
Prairie was held to just 2 baskets in the decisive third quarter. They added 9 points from the free throw line but it wasn’t enough to counter Nezperce’s 7 baskets that included the two 3-pointers.
After that Prairie never got any closer than 10 the rest of the way. 
Prairie trailed 39-53 at the end of the third quarter.
The closest they were able to get in the fourth quarter was 11 points at 51-62 and 53-64 the latter with 2:38 left to play after a basket by Crane.
Crane led the Pirates in scoring with 17 points and had a double-double as he added 17 rebounds. Corey Schaeffer also had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Mat Forsmann scored 13 with Sean Daly adding 7 and Chris Schumacher 5. Harris led Nezperce with 26 with Lunders adding 19 points.
Prairie held a 48-35 rebounding edge with Forsmann adding 7 boards to the totals of Crane and Schaeffer.
Schaeffer had 3 steals and Forsmann had 7 assists.
Prairie had 24 turnovers while Nezperce had just 13.
The Pirates hit 21 of 54 shots from the field, 39%, and 11 of 23 from the line. Nezperce was 25 for 67 from the field, 37%, and 12 for 17 at the line.
The loss drops Prairie to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
In the JV game Prairie outscored Nezperce 8-1 in the final minute to claim a 54-50 win.
Prairie jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game but Nezperce came back to tie the score at 12 by the end of the first quarter.
Mat Forsmann and Seth Crane watch to see if Mat's shot goes in.In the second quarter Prairie again got off to a good start as Tyler Forsmann, Nate Kaschmitter and Steven Baerlocher each scored a basket for an 18-12 Prairie lead. Nezperce again answered though with a 1-9 run that gave them a 19-21 lead.
Prairie took the lead back at 25-24 on a basket by Forsmann but Nezperce reclaimed the lead at the half, 26-28.
The Indians got a quick 5 points in the third on a 3-pointer and a lay-up off a turnover for a 7 point lead.
After Prairie rallied to within 1 at 32-33, Nezperce connected on a pair of 3-pointers that helped them take a 34-39 lead into the fourth quarter.
Nezperce built the lead to as big as 8 points at 36-44 but then Prairie started to chip away.
The Indians still led 38-45 when Jake Holthaus, Kaschmitter and Forsmann each scored to cut the lead to 1 at 44-45.
Nezperce led by 3 at 46-49 with 1:16 left.
A basket by Forsmann cut the lead to 1 with 1:08 left. Forsmann added a putback with 36 seconds left that gave Prairie their first lead since late in the first half.
Holthaus added a driving lay-up to put Prairie up by 3 and after a Nezperce free throw, Eric Daly put the final points on the board with 3 seconds left.
Holthaus wound up with 14 points to lead the Pirates with Forsmann scoring 12 and Kaschmitter 11. Daniel Sigler added 8 points, Eric Daly 6, Baerlocher 2 and Kyle Daly 1.
Prairie held a 48-32 rebounding edge led by Forsmann with 11. Kyle Daly added 10 rebounds and Kaschmitter had 8.
Kaschmitter had 4 steals and 3 assists while Eric Daly had 3 steals.
Prairie was 22 for 55 from the field, 40%. They were 10 for 16 in the decisive fourth quarter. The Pirates were 10 for 21 at the line. Nezperce was 20 for 59 from the field, 34%, and 3 for 9 at the line.

Pirates split at Orofino Tournament
The Prairie Pirates split their games at the Orofino Christmas Tournament and came away with third place last Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 21-22.
They lost to eventual tournament champion Asotin 46-49 on Wednesday and then defeated Summit Academy 56-42 on Thursday.
Against Asotin Prairie had led much of the way but fell behind in the fourth quarter.
They took an 8-5 lead after one quarter and led 20-16 at the half.
They maintained that 4 point lead through the end of the third quarter as they led 34-30 going into the final period.
Prairie was outscored 12-19 in the fourth quarter.
They made a desperation foul late in the game, trailing by 2. Asotin’s Charles Appleton made the first free throw but missed the second. Somehow he was able to rebound his miss though and with only 2 seconds left on the clock was able to hold the ball as time ran out.
Seth Crane was the Pirates’ leading scorer with 18 points with Mat Forsmann adding 12. Corey Schaeffer scored 6 while Josh Gabica and Sean Daly scored 3 each and Ryan Daly and J.D. Riener scored 2 each.
Sean Daly had the game’s only 3-pointer.
In the third place game against Summit the Patriots grabbed the early lead as they held a 12-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie amped up their full court press in the second quarter and were able to take a 23-22 lead at the half.
The Pirates were able to pull away in the second half as they outscored the Patriots 13-6 in the third quarter and 20-14 in the fourth.
Schaeffer led the Pirates in scoring with 21 points while Forsmann scored 14 and Crane 13. Riener and Ryan Daly added 4 points each.
Summit was led by Chris Hattrup who had 12 points. David Spencer had 9 points, Jacob Uhlenkott  6 , Zack Frei 5, Stephen Spencer 4 and Brandon Rehder and Justin Stubbers 3 each.
Forsmann had a pair of 3-pointers for Prairie while Hattrup had 2 for Summit and Rehder, Frei and Stubbers had 1 each.
Prairie heads into Christmas Break with a 3-4 record while Summit falls to 0-5.

Wrestlers travel to Pullman

Traveling to the Pullman tournament Saturday, Dec. 17, were the wrestlers from Prairie High School.James Jackson competes at Pullman where he won his weight class.
With traveling on Friday the boys practiced and slept on the mats, providing a little entertainment for the boys. 
Getting up the next morning and ready to wrestle, the boys did very well. Even though some of the boys had trouble in their weight class we managed to take home four medals home that evening. 
James Jackson 1st in his weight bracket, Micheal Matson 1st and Anthony Duman 2nd, and Jacob Wimer coming home with 3rd. The rest of the boys did very well and worked very hard.
Next the wrestlers will be going to Pomeroy on Friday.
