Pirates win big
The Prairie football team thoroughly dominated Meadows Valley as they won their season opener 54-8 at Cottonwood Friday, August 25.Danny Riener broke out of this attempted tackle and went on to score the game's first touchdown. At left are Jake Holthaus, 23, and J.D. Riener.
Meadows Valley turned the ball over the first five times they had the ball and had 7 turnovers altogether.
The tone for the game was set on the first two plays. Ronnie Chandler kicked off for Prairie. He was supposed to kick deep but didn’t hit the ball solid and it only just cleared the front line of Meadows Valley’s return team. Nobody from the Mountaineers went after the ball and Chandler wound up recovering it for the Pirates at the 36 yard line.
On the next play Danny Riener went left with the ball, cut back to the middle and broke free for a 36 yard touchdown run and a 6-0 Prairie lead just 11 seconds into the game.
Meadows Valley received the kickoff and held it for just 1 play as David Sigler intercepted a pass at the Prairie 41.
Prairie was able to move the ball down to the 8 for a first and goal but a penalty, sack for a 6 yard loss and two incomplete passes turned the ball back to Meadows Valley at the 14.
The Mountaineers gave the ball right back though on the next play as an attempted pitchout never connected with the runner and Danny Riener recovered at the 5.
Riener picked up his second touchdown on the next play and added the 2-pointer for a 14-0 lead.
Meadows Valley fumbled the kickoff but managed to recover it at the 25. They held the ball for 2 plays then fumbled it away again with Branden Waller recovering at the Meadows Valley 29 yard line.

Meadows Valley had a holding penalty on the kickoff runback that pushed them back to the 11. After an incomplete pass and a 2 yard loss, Sigler got his second interception of the game at the 32 yard line and was able to elude the Meadows Valley players to return the ball for a touchdown.

Meadows Valley then tried an onside kick but it only went 6 yards and Prairie took over at the Meadows Valley 46.
The first team offense came back on the field and took 3 plays to score. Ryan Daly gained 15 yards up the middle with 5 more tacked on for a facemask penalty. Riener gained 7 on a pitch to the right. After a false start penalty, Kyle Hotlhaus found Sigler wide open to the left for a 24 yard scoring play. The conversion failed as Prairie led 36-8.
Two plays after the kickoff, Tyler Forsmann recovered another Meadows Valley fumble. This time they tried a lateral pass but it never came close to connecting. Forsmann recovered at the Meadows Valley 20.
With the second unit back on the field it took just 3 plays to add another touchdown. After two running plays netted 4 yards, Nate Kaschmitter spotted Tyler Forsmann wide open over the middle and connected with him for a 16 yard touchdown. The conversion again failed and Prairie led 42-8. That’s where it stood at the half as an interception by Jake Holthaus ended the Mountaineers next possession.
Meadows Valley tried another onside kick to start the second half but Corey Schaeffer recovered at the Prairie 48.
Kyle Daly gained 12 yards on a crossbuck to the left. Branden Waller then took the crossbuck handoff to the right on the next play and found nobody there on that side of the defense. He went 40 yards for a touchdown. That made it 48-8 as the conversion try failed.
Meadows Valley tried a fake punt after 3 plays netted a loss of 3 yards. Danny Riener stopped the play cold for a 1 yard loss as Prairie took over at the 34.
Prairie took 5 plays to end the game on the 45-point mercy rule. David Sigler converted a third and 8 play with a 14 yard gain on an end sweep.
