19 out for boys basketball
“Talent-wise we have the chance to do some good things come March,” was head coach Jerry Uhling’s assessment of this year’s Prairie boys basketball team.
“We’ll be as good as our defense and rebounding allow us to be,” said Uhling. Head coach Jerry Uhling runs his players through a drill. New assistant coach Kevin Chaffee is behind Uhling.
Uhling has a new assistant coach this year in Kevin Chaffee, who has helped out with the team in the past. Also assisting again is Pat Holthaus.
There are nineteen players turned out this year with 8 playing full-time varsity, 8 full-time JV and 3 players who will spend time on both squads.
Returning varsity players are Corey Schaeffer, J.D. Riener and Ryan Daly, all seniors, with Nate Kaschmitter and Tyler Forsmann, a senior and sophomore respectively, who spent some time on the varsity last season as well. Also full time varsity players this year are senior Daniel Sigler, sophomore Kyle Daly and freshman David Sigler.
Swing players will be senior Ben Forsmann and freshmen Kyle Holthaus and Branden Waller.
Full-time JV players will be junior exchange student Vit Spanhiel, sophomore Eric Daly and freshmen Conner Rieman, Joe Schumacher, Jeremy Ross, Chris Schmidt, Andrew Gabica and Derek Schaeffer.
Uhling expects Genesee, Troy and Kendrick to be the top teams in the league. Defending state champion Lapwai and regulars season league champion Nezperce were both hit very hard by graduation.
The Pirates get into action this Friday with a non-league game at Kamiah followed by non-league games at Nezperce on Saturday and at Lapwai on Tuesday. They don’t play a league game until January 5 when they travel to Kendrick.
As with the girls they play only 1 league game against each team in the league this year.
The Pirate boys run a 4 on 4 drill.
