Pirates lose at Timberline
The Prairie Pirates couldn’t get much of anything going offensively until late in the third quarter and by then they were down by 19 points as they fell to the Timberline Spartans 38-46 at Weippe Friday, Jan. 19.Ryan Daly makes a pass. Also shown is David Sigler.
Prairie nearly went 0 for the first quarter as their only point was a free throw by Corey Schaeffer with 51 seconds left. They were 0 for 10 from the field and 1 for 4 at the line as Timberline took a 1-9 lead into the second period.
Ryan Daly scored Prairie’s first basket of the game with 5:27 left in the half and J.D. Riener added 2 more baskets in the second quarter as Prairie mustered only 7 points in the first half.
They were still in the game though as Timberline scored only 17.
The Spartans pretty much put the game away though as they outscored Prairie 2-11 in the first 6:30 of the third quarter to take a 9-28 lead.
Prairie finally broke into double figures when Schaeffer connected on a pair of free throws with 2:26 left in the quarter.
20 seconds later Daly drove for a lay-up and converted a 3-point play to pull the Pirates back within 14 at 14-28. The margin was still 14 at the end of the quarter at 18-32.
Timberline scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 18 at 18-36.
Prairie then mounted a comeback attempt. Schaeffer scored a pair of baskets, Riener scored a layup, and David Sigler scored a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer as Prairie cut the lead to 7 at 29-36 with 4:34 left.
David Sigler puts up a 3-point attempt.Timberline was able to score enough free throws and backdoor lay-ups against the gambling Prairie defense the rest of the way though to hold off the Pirates as Prairie could get no closer than that 7 point deficit.
Schaeffer wound up with 18 points to lead the Pirates with 17 of those coming in the second half. Sigler added 7 points, all in the fourth quarter. Ryan Daly scored 6, Riener 5 and Branden Waller 2.
Timberline outrebounded Prairie 37-47. Riener led the Pirates with 13 rebounds while Schaeffer had 9. 
Schaeffer had 3 steals and 3 assists while Sigler had 2 steals and Ryan Daly had 2 assists.
Prairie hit just 11 of 57 shots from the field, 19%, and 14 of 25 free throws. Timberline was 19 for 49 from the field, 39%, and 8 for 14 at the line.
The loss drops the Pirates to 2-2 in league play and 9-5 overall.
In the JV game Prairie outscored Timberline 16-7 in the fourth quarter to win 47-38.
The game was very close through the first 3 quarters as neither team led by more than 4 points and the score was tied 10 times with 7 lead changes.
Prairie led just 10-9 after the first quarter with Branden Waller scoring 6 of Prairie’s 10 points.
Timberline took the lead early in the second at 10-14 but Prairie came back to take a 20-18 lead as Waller added 6 more points. He was 6 for 9 from the field in the first half.The Prairie defenders surrounds a Timberline player.
Timberline scored the final 4 points of the half at the free throw line though to take a 20-22 lead at halftime.
Waller scored 9 of Prairie’s 11 third quarter points with Andrew Gabica scoring the other 2. Prairie led most of the quarter but Timberline was able to tie the score at 31 with 5 seconds left.
A pair of free throws by Waller gave Prairie the lead for good 44 seconds into the fourth quarter.
A putback by Conner Rieman and a lay-up by Waller made it 37-31. 
Timberline cut the lead to 4 at 39-35 but a pair of free throws by Gabica started Prairie on a 7-0 run. A free throw each by Rieman and Waller plus a basket by Waller and a free throw by Derek Schaeffer made it 46-35 with less than a minute to play.
Waller wound up with 29 points to lead all scorers as he hit 12 of 21 from the field and 5 of 8 at the line. Rieman added 7 points, Gabica 6, Daniel Sigler 4 and Schaeffer 1.
Timberline outrebounded Prairie 39-45. Waller led Prairie with 14 rebounds while Rieman had 13.
Gabica had 4 steals and Rieman had 3 assists.
Prairie was 17 for 43 from the field, 40%, and 13 for 25 at the line while Timberline was 13 for 56 from the field, 23%, and 10 for 16 at the line.
