Lapwai ends Prairie's season
A promising season ended in disappointment as the Prairie Pirates were eliminated by Lapwai 48-59 in district tournament action Friday, Feb. 23 at Lewiston.
Prairie had beaten Lapwai twice during the season but the third time was the charm for the Wildcats, who edged Nezperce in double overtime on Saturday to advance to state.J.D. Riener puts up a shot in the lane. Corey Schaeffer at right is ready for a rebound.
Early on the only player who could score for Prairie was Corey Schaeffer as he scored the Pirates’ first 11 points.
Prairie trailed 4-7 after one quarter with Schaeffer scoring the first and last baskets of the quarter, both on putbacks.
He connected on a short jumper to open the second quarter scoring and close the margin to 1.
After a Lapwai basket, Schaeffer was fouled on a lay-up and tied the score with the free throw.
After another Lapwai basket, he again tied the score at 11 with a putback.
Lapwai then scored the next 7 straight points and 14 of the next 16 points to take control of the game.
A contributing factor was 4 of Prairie’s starters getting into foul trouble. That led to the Pirates putting 3 freshmen on the floor for much of the quarter as started David Sigler was joined by classmates Branden Waller and Kyle Holthaus. Waller in fact was the first Pirates other than Schaeffer to score as he had the only Prairie points in Lapwai’s 2-16 run.

Tyler Forsmann and Sigler joined in on the scoring in the third quarter but Prairie was unable to gain any ground. Forsmann hit a lay-up and 2 jump shots from the elbow for 6 points in the quarter while Sigler was 4 for 6 at the free throw line but Prairie still trailed 29-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
A basket each by Waller and J.D. Riener got Prairie within 9 at 33-42.
They couldn’t pull any closer though until the 2:44 mark when Schaeffer’s putback cut the lead to 8 at 45-53.
That capped a 6-0 run for the Pirates after Lapwai had pushed the lead to 14 with 3:27 left.
The Pirates couldn’t get any closer though as a basket and 4 straight free throws allowed Lapwai to end the Pirates’ season.
Schaeffer wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 15 points. Waller scored 8 while Sigler, Forsmann and Riener had 7 points each and Ryan and Kyle Daly each scored 2.
Lapwai also had a 34-40 rebounding edge led by Drew Church who had 17. Schaeffer led the Pirates with 9 rebounds while Forsmann had 6.
Waller had 3 steals and Sigler had 3 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 51 from the field, 37%, and just 9 for 21 at the line while Lapwai was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 16 for 22 at the line.
With the loss Prairie ends their season with a 14-9 record.
