32 out for football this year
There were 32 players turned out for Prairie High School football as of the Watermelon Bowl intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, August 18.Kyle Holthaus was well protected by his line as he sets up to pass.
It appears the team might feature a more balanced offense of run and pass this year after graduating their top two running backs from last season.
Kyle Daly and Branden Waller look to fill the running back spots with Kyle Holthaus back at quarterback along with top receiver David Sigler. Conner Rieman caught several passes during the scrimmage as well.
Returning linemen Nick Johnson, Kenneth Enneking and Ronnie Chandler will be helped by transfer student Kyler Shumway, son of the new PHS principal.
Returning as coaches for the Pirates are head coach Travis Mader and assistants Ron Sigler, Teel Bruner and Ryan Hasselstrom.
The team opens their season this Friday against state tournament competitor Horseshoe Bend at their field. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. Mountain Time.
Players on the squad this year are Sigler, Rieman, Holthaus, Waller, Daly, Mike Matson, Zach Frei, Cody Miller, Devin Schmidt, Jon Rice, Zak Waller, Brandon Ross, Colton Nuxoll, Jason VonBargen, Shumway, Andy Groom, Johnson, Enneking, Chandler, J.C. Enriquez, Ryan Dalgliesh, Ethan Tassell, Kris Banning, Tyrell Langston, Jack George, Dustin Schaeffer, Joe Schumacher, Ronald George, Chase Nuxoll, Derek Schaeffer and Wil Schlader.
Frei, Schlader and Chase Nuxoll are Summit Academy students who have joined the PHS team.
