Pirates win big at Genesee
A third quarter scoring explosion for the Prairie football team led to a 68-20 win at Genesee Friday, Sept. 7.
Prairie led 20-6 at the half and Genesee was able to score on an 86 yard touchdown run on their first play of the second half to pull within 20-12 but then the Pirates took over.David Sigler makes an acrobatic catch for a big gain that set up a touchdown.
That long touchdown run seemed to be a wakeup call for the Pirates as they blitzed Genesee with the passing game and piled up 36 points in the third quarter.
Kyle Holthaus got hot in the passing game as he completed all 9 pass attempts in the second half for 163 yards after completing just 3 of 9 for 74 yards in the first half.
The game started slowly as both teams turned the ball over on their first possessions.
Prairie fumbled the ball over to Genesee at the Genesee 34 but then got the ball right back when David Sigler intercepted Genesee’s first pass attempt at the 50.
The teams then traded punts with Prairie getting the ball back at their own 38.
2 plays later Kyle Daly burst through the middle for 55 yards and the first touchdown of the game and a 6-0 Prairie lead.
Genesee came back with a long drive but Sigler’s second interception ended it at the Prairie 20.
Prairie picked up a couple of first downs but a pair of huge losses led to a punt.
Genesee took over at the Prairie 48 after a 17 yard punt return. The Prairie defense forced them to turn the ball over on downs at the 42.
Sigler then made an acrobatic catch for a 33 yard gain to put Prairie on the Genesee 25. A 9 yard run by Branden Waller was followed by a 10 yard gain by Daly that gave Prairie a first and goal at the 6. 4 plays later, Daly went over from the 1 on fourth down for the touchdown. Waller ran in the 2-pointer for a 14-0 lead.
Prairie again stopped Genesee on downs as their fourth down try came up only an inch or two short at the Genesee 46.
Prairie picked up a first down with the help of an offside penalty and then Daly picked up his third touchdown of the game. Prairie set up in a shotgun formation and looked like they were going to pass  but Holthaus then handed off to Daly who took the ball 33 yards for a touchdown. The conversion try failed leaving Prairie up 20-0 with 2:28 left in the half.
Genesee answered back with their first score of the game. Quarterback Beau Dahmen rolled out to the right and it appeared that one of the Genesee lineman pulled down one of the Prairie defenders chasing Dahmen as Dahmen threw for a 40-yard touchdown play. Surprisingly Prairie got called for a penalty on the play and the touchdown stood, making it 20-6 at the half.
After Genesee’s quick strike to open the third quarter Prairie came right back with a touchdown of their own. Holthaus completed 3 straight passes, 11 yards to Waller, 30 to Sigler over the middle and a 10-yard pass to Sigler for the touchdown. Holthaus ran in the 2-pointer for a 28-12 lead.
Prairie’s defense forced a punt and Prairie went to the air again. Holthaus completed a short pass to Conner Rieman for 9 yards, Daly ran for 10 and then Holthaus connected with Waller deep downfield along the right sideline for a 29 yard touchdown play. The conversion try failed, making it 34-12.
Branden Waller snags a pass for a big gain.Genesee then fumbled on the kickoff return with Zach Frei recovering at the 43. It took Prairie only 1 play to score as Holthaus passed deep downfield to a wide open Sigler for a 43 yard touchdown. Waller added the conversion to make it 42-12 as Prairie had scored 3 touchdowns in less than 3 minutes.
Genesee went for it on fourth down from their own 36 on their next possession and Daly blitzed Dahmen from the blind side and sacked him for a 9 yard loss to set Prairie up at the 22.
4 plays later Holthaus went in from the 2 and Waller added the conversion to make it 50-12.
The defense even got into the scoring act on Genesee’s next possession as Daly again sacked Dahmen, this time forcing a fumble that Rieman picked up at the 7 and ran in for a score to make it 56-12 with 2:52 still left in the third quarter. The conversion try failed or Prairie would’ve ended the game right there on the 45-point rule.
Genesee came back with a score of their own and added the 2-pointer to make the score 56-20 as 48 combined points were scored in the third quarter.
Prairie lost 10 yards on their first play of the ensuing possession but Holthaus then connected for 43 yards to Waller to set the Pirates up deep in Genesee territory.
Two first downs later Prairie had a first and goal at the 3. Waller dove in from the 1 3 plays later to make it 62-20.
After the kickoff, the subs went in on both sides.
Genesee turned the ball over on downs and after Tyrell Langston had picked up 28 yards on 3 running plays, Prairie turned the ball over.
Genesee fumbled it right back 2 plays later with Dustin Schaeffer recovering at the 21.Kyle Holthaus' eyes get big as he gains yardage on a QB keeper.
On the next play, backup quarterback Devin Schmidt ended the game with a 21 yard scoring run. The game was called on the 45-point rule with 2:49 left on the clock.
Daly had his second straight 170+ yard rushing game as he gained 171 yards on 23 carries and had 3 touchdowns. Waller added 33 yards on 10 carries, Langston 28 on 3 carries and Schmidt 21 yards on 1 carries as Prairie totaled 254 yards rushing on 43 carries.
Holthaus completed 12 of 18 pass attempts, including his final 9 in a row, for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Sigler caught 6 passes for 147 yards, Waller 4 for 73 yards and Rieman 2 for 17 yards.
Genesee picked up 156 yards rushing, 86 of that on 1 play, on 36 attempts led by Daniel Carlson who had 113 yards on 8 carries.
Genesee quarterbacks completed 6 of 17 passes with 2 interceptions for 107 yards.
On defense Waller had 10½ tackles while Rieman had 7½ tackles with 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery for a touchdown. Daly had 5 tackles and 2 sacks. Cody Miller had 4½ tackles. Kyler Shumway and Andy Groom had 3 tackles each. Sigler had 2½ tackles and 2 interceptions. Schmidt had 2½ tackles. Frei had 1½ tackles and a fumble recovery.
