Three earn medals at Pomeroy Tournament
Ronald George earned a second place medal in the 152 lb. weight class at the Pomeroy Christmas Wrestling Tournament held Saturday, Dec. 29.
Earning medals for third place finishes were James Jackson at 145 lbs., and Michael Matson at 160 lbs.Ronald George attempts to turn his opponent on his way to a second place medal.
George opened his run with a 12-3 victory over Andrew Beckmann of St. John-Endicott and then pinned Zach Hyer of Pomeroy in 5:13 to make the championship match. There he faced Scott Wolf, also of Pomeroy and lost by pin in 1:32.
Jackson opened with a 9-4 win over Dustin Taylor of Wilbur-Creston-Keller then lost 3-9 to Willie Whipple of Dayton. In the consolation semifinals he pinned James Anderson of St. John-Endicott in 3:24 setting up a rematch with Taylor. He won again, this time by 13-2 to earn 3rd place.
Matson started off by making quick work of his match against Barney Ferguson of Wilbur-Creston-Keller, pinning him in just 43 seconds. He then lost by pin to Matt Slaybaugh of Pomeroy on the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals he shut out Corey Stevens of Dayton 6-0 the won by pin over Colton Knebel of Mercer Island in 5:24 to earn third place.
Earning a 4th place finish was Brandon Poxleitner at 135 lbs. He open with a 9-4 win over Austin Zarring of Pullman. In the semifinals he lost by pin to Chris Pena of Brewster. In the consolation semifinals he pinned Evan Davies of Pullman in 2:29 then lost by pin in the 3rd place match to Luther Nichols of St. John-Endicott in 1:16.
Also earning a 4th place finish was Mitchel Jungert in the 285 lb. class. Jungert lost by pin to Danny VanOrden of Pullman in 3:21 in the semifinals then lost 0-8 to Clint Hinton of Colfax in the third place match.
Jake Wimer also earned a 4th place finish in the 171 lb. class. He won by pin in his first match over Ethan McGee of Pomeroy in 1:16. In the semifinals he lost to Jon Soulier of Wilbur-Creston-Keller by pin in 3:21. In the third place match he lost by pin to Cody Brown of Pomeroy in 1:15.
Finishing in 5th place at 145 lbs. was Tyrell Langston. In his first match he won by pin over James Anderson of St. John-Endicott in 4:42. In the semifinals he lost a 0-17 technical fall to Matt David of Pullman. In the consolation semifinals he lost 7-11 to Dustin Taylor of Wilbur-Creston-Keller and in the 5th place match he had a rematch against Anderson and won by decision this time, 8-3.
Wrestling but not placing was Chance Ratcliff at 189 lbs. He lost by pin to Ethan Smith of Colfax in 1:02 then was eliminated by Jim Roland of Wilbur-Creston-Keller who pinned him in 1:46.
As a team Prairie placed 6th among 11 teams with host team Pomeroy placing 1st.
