Three earn medals at Pomeroy Tournament
James Jackson and Jake Wimer each earned a third place medal at the Kamiah Wrestling Tournament held January 4-5, the highest finish by any Prairie wrestler.
Brandon Poxleitner and Mitchel Jungert each made the consolation final match in their weight classes but lost and each wound up in fourth place.Jake Wimer drives an opponent to the mat for a takedown.
In the bracketed portion of the tournament held mostly on Saturday, Poxleitner started the day by pinning an Orofino wrestler in 1:49 to advance to the 135 lb. semifinals. There he ran into Michael Skinner, also of Orofino, who won by pin in the final seconds just moments after Poxleitner nearly had him pinned. In the consolation semifinals Poxleitner won by pin over Brandon Mock of Clarkston then lost by pin to Rick O’Donnell of St. Maries in 3:57 in the 3rd place match.
At 145 lbs. Jackson won a 7-1 decision over Aaron Iriarte of the Lewiston JV to advance to the semifinals. There he lost a 9-24 technical fall to eventual champion Luke Lane of Kamiah. He won by pin in the consolation semifinals over Brandon Keeler of Grangeville then won a tough 2-1 decision over Troy Sines of St. Maries in the third place match.
At 160 lbs. Michael Matson lost both his matches, losing to Ricky Avalon of St. Maries by an 11-6 decision then losing by pin to Orofino’s David Upton in 2:23.
At 171 lbs. Jake Wimer made short work of Caselyn Lybbert of Lewiston, winning by pin in 22 seconds. In the semifinals he lost to Kasey Garland of Orofino by pin in 1:52. In the consolation semifinals he defeated Blake Sines of St. Maries, winning by pin in 3:57. In the 3rd place match the score was 0-0 after one period of action but in the second period Jake took the up position and took control, winning by pin in 2:17.
At 189 lbs. Chance Ratcliffe won by pin over Cody Chase of Clarkston in 48 seconds then lost by pin to Calen Jackson of Grangeville and Jack Marek of Grangeville.
At heavyweight Mitchel Jungert lost by pin to Jason Dutton of St. Maries in the semifinals then lost by pin in 1:36 to Bryan Cummings of Potlatch in the third place match.
Next action for the wrestling team is the Orofino Tournament Jan. 11-12.
