Pirates win 11-2 at C.V.
The Prairie baseball team picked up a league win as they defeated Clearwater Valley for the second time this season, 11-2 at Kooskia Tuesday, April 1.
C.V. took the early lead in the game as they converted a leadoff double into a run in the first inning with a 2-out single.Eric Daly slides safely into third.
Prairie tied it in the top of the second when Conner Rieman beat out an infield hit, stole second and scored on Joe Schumacher’s single past shortstop into left field.
C.V. took back the lead in the bottom of the inning on an error and a double that made it 1-2.
In the third Prairie took the lead for good. Kyle Holthaus led off with a walk. He stole second and when the catcher’s throw sailed into centerfield, he went on to third. After an out, Eric Daly singled to left to score Holthaus. Daly stole second then went to third on a passed ball. Ronnie Chandler followed with a high fly to left center that found a gap for a double that scored Daly.
Rieman reached on an error then Steven Baerlocher singled up the middle to score Chandler and make it 4-2 for Prairie.
The Pirates added 3 more runs in the fourth.
Holthaus singled up the middle and then advanced to third the same way he did earlier, on a stolen base with the catcher’s throw getting past the second baseman. Kyle Daly and Eric Daly both walked to load the bases.
Ronnie Chandler goes into his slide as he advances to second. After a second out was made, Rieman drove the ball to right field for a single and with the ensuing error by the right fielder, all 3 runners scored and Rieman wound up on third.
Prairie added 4 more runs in the sixth on just 1 hit.
Holthaus led off and was hit by a pitch. After an out, Eric Daly grounded back to the pitcher but every one was safe when the pitcher’s throw to second went behind the shortstop covering the bag. Chandler then reached to load the bases when the first baseman dropped a short pop-up in the infield. Rieman walked to force in Holthaus. A wild pitch allowed Daly to score and Baerlocher grounded out to score Chandler. Rieman then scored on Schumacher’s single to left to make it 11-2.
Holthaus pitched the first six innings for the Pirates allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks.
Rieman pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to finish the game.
Prairie had some great defensive plays in the game as Rieman, the catcher, picked a runner off third in the second inning nailed a runner trying to steal second in the sixth. Holthaus picked a runner off trying to steal third in the fourth. Kyle Daly in left also gunned out a runner trying to advance from second to third on a deep fly ball out in the third.
Prairie had 8 hits with Schumacher and Rieman each collecting a pair of singles. Each also had 2 RBI.
Chandler had an RBI double while Baerlocher had a single and 2 RBI. Eric Daly had an RBI single and Holthaus added a single.
With the win Prairie improves to 2-0 in league and 3-1 on the season.
