Pirates beat Hagerman in semifinals
The Prairie Pirates played outstanding defense in the semifinals of the state 1-A Division 1 tournament as they defeated Hagerman 44-36 Friday, March 6 at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.
Kyle Holthaus passes to Conner Rieman in the Hagerman game.Hagerman was one o the pre-tournament favorites after returning all but 1 player from last year’s state runner-up.
Their big scorer was 6’6” wide-body Tanner Owen but he picked up 2 quick fouls and Tyler Forsmann did a great job of denying him touches throughout the game.
Prairie took a 4-2 lead in the game but fell behind 4-8 in the first quarter.
A free throw by David Sigler, a pair of free throws by Branden Waller and a 3-pointer by Waller that came after a steal by Kyle Daly, put Prairie back on top at 10-8.
After Hagerman tied the score, Kyle Daly put the Pirates back on top with a shot from just inside the 3-point arc as the quarter expired.
The lead changed hands 4 times in the second quarter as Hagerman opened with a 3-point play to take a 1-point lead. Kyle Holthaus answered with a shot from the side. Hagerman went back on top but Prairie took back the lead when Holthaus collected an offensive rebound and fed Devin Schmidt for a lay-up.
Waller then added a pair of free throws to make it a 3-point lead with 4:09 left in the half.
Each team added only 3 points in the final 4 minutes of the half as Prairie led 21-18 at the break.
Prairie dominated the action in the third quarter as they held Hagerman scoreless for over 5 minutes as they went on a 7-0 run.
Kyle Daly scored 3 and Sigler and Waller scored 2 each in that run. Hagerman hit just 2 of 8 shots in the quarter. Prairie wasn’t much better at 3 for 8 but outscored Hagerman 3-0 at the free throw line.
Neither team scored in the first 2:24 of the fourth quarter with Waller scoring a reverse lay-up with 5:36 left to give Prairie a 32-22 lead.
Hagerman was able to rally within 4 points thanks to a 3-point play, a 3-pointer and a basket that cut the lead to 34-30 with 2:09 left.
Prairie then answered with an 8-0 run with 6 of those points coming at the free throw line. Kyle Daly’s steal and drive for a lay-up was the only field goal in that stretch. That gave Prairie a 42-30 lead with 27 seconds left.
Hagerman cut the final lead to 8 with a couple of late 3-pointers while Sigler scored a basket.
The win put Prairie into the state championship game against the same school they beat for their only state title 27 years ago. By the way it was Prairie’s 7th straight win in state tournament play dating back to 1977.
Waller had 17 points to lead the Pirates in scoring while Sigler scored 11, Kyle Daly 7, Schmidt 5 and Holthaus 4.
Prairie outrebounded Hagerman 24-20 with Kyle Daly grabbing 10 boards. He also had 4 steals and Sigler had 3 assists.

Pirates take second at State
For the fourth time this year the Prairie Pirates couldn’t get past Genesee as they fell to the unbeaten Bulldogs 41-54 in the 1-A Division 1 state championship game Saturday, March 7 at the Idaho Center at Nampa.Kyle Daly puts up a shot against Genesee.
The Pirates had trouble adjusting to the open space behind the basket in the first half and only 2 of their 7 first half baskets came from the perimeter.
They had better luck in the second half as there was a black curtain on that end behind the basket that made for a better shooting background.
Genesee took advantage of the better backdrop to hit 7 of 12 first quarter shots while Prairie was hitting just 3 of 10.
Genesee’s Beau Dahmen hit 4 of 4 shots in the opening quarter but struggled much of the rest of the game as he had one stretch where he hit just 1 of 10 shots before making his final 3 attempts.
Kyle Daly scored 4 points in the opening quarter and Sigler the other 2 as Prairie trailed 6-17 after the opening period.
They couldn’t make any headway in the second quarter as they trailed 14-26 at the half.
Prairie came out strong in the third quarter with Kyle Daly scoring a basket, Sigler a 3-pointer and Daly 2 free throws as Prairie quickly cut the Genesee lead to just 5 point at 21-26.
Unfortunately that was as close as they would get as Daniel Carlson, Jaymon Udy or Alan Berry would score for Genesee to keep Prairie from gaining ground even as Dahmen had cooled off.
The deficit was back to 9 by the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter Genesee took advantage of free throws to keep Prairie at bay as they connected on 10 of 15 attempts in the final frame.
Forsmann found the range in the second half, scoring 10 of his 12 points as he and Sigler matched for team-high in scoring. Kyle Daly scored 8, Devin Schmidt 3 and Waller, Conner Rieman and Andrew Gabica scored 2 each.
Dahmen had 19 for Genesee while Carlson had 16.
Genesee held a 24-32 rebounding edge. Daly had 8 to lead Prairie.
Sigler had 2 steals and Daly had 3 assists.
Eric Daly missed the second half with back problems.
Prairie was 17 for 49 from the field, 35%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%. Genesee was 19 for 39 from the field, 49%, and 14 for 19 from the line, 74%.
With the loss Prairie finishes their season at 19-7.
