Pirates hold off Grangeville 14-11
Seth Guyer hit 2 home runs and had 8 RBI as the Prairie baseball team completed a season sweep with a 14-11 win over Grangeville Thursday, April 16 at Cottonwood.Seth Guyer is congratulated at home plate after his grand slam homer put Prairie ahead of Grangeville.
Prairie’s offense in the game more than made up for the problems they had defensively as 7 of Grangeville’s 11 runs were unearned thanks to 6 Pirate errors.
Prairie also benefited from errors as their first baserunner reached as result of an error. Kyle Holthaus reached with 1 out in the bottom of the first and David Sigler followed with an infield hit. Ronnie Chandler then scored both runners for a 2-0 lead with a double to the gap in left.
Prairie added a run in the second as Steven Baerlocher led off with a long single that was about a foot short of clearing the fence in right center. He moved to second when the pitcher was called for a balk. Joe Schumacher followed with a single to right to move Baerlocher to third.
With Kyle Daly at the plate the Grangeville catcher tried to pick off Baerlocher at third but his throw hit Daly’s helmet and bounced away allowing Baerlocher to score.
Meanwhile pitcher Conner Rieman, in his first outing of the season, was sailing along allowing a leadoff single then retiring 7 straight hitters. In the top of the third though, the errors started. A single and 3 errors allowed 4 straight hitters to reach with 2 runs scoring. A second out was made then a dropped popup for another error allowed another run to score and a 2 run double followed giving the Bulldogs a 3-5 lead.
The Pirates needed to come right back from that and they did. Sigler led off the Pirates’ third inning with a single down the third base line and Chandler walked. Conner Rieman singled to right to load the bases. Guyer then stepped to the plate and drove an 0-1 pitch deep over the fence in  right center for a grand slam homer that put Prairie back into the lead at 7-5.
After an out Schumacher beat out an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Kyle Daly then grounded to third with the third baseman throwing to first for the out. Schumacher advanced to third on the throw and the return throw from first wound up getting past the third baseman and rolling under the fence near the Pirates’ dugout. Schumacher was advanced to the plate on the play for another run as the Pirates matched Grangeville’s 5-run inning.
Prairie added to their lead in the fourth with Sigler again singling down the third base line to start things. Chandler then doubled almost to the same spot as he did in the first inning to score Sigler. Chandler went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Guyer’s single up the middle. Guyer then stole second and scored when Baerlocher’s grounder to short went through the wickets for an error.
Ronnie Chandler slides into second with a double against Grangeville.Prairie took an 11-5 lead into the fifth where the defense failed them again. Grangeville scored 4 more runs with only one of them earned. Two errors in the inning along with 2 doubles and 2 singles accounted for the runs. Chandler made a great catch of a foul pop-up near the Prairie dugout to get Prairie out of the inning.
The Bulldogs then cut the lead to just 1 with a run in the sixth on 2 hits off Sigler who started the inning in relief of Rieman.
Guyer gave the Pirates some insurance runs in the bottom of the inning though. Chandler singled to left to lead of the inning and Rieman was hit by a pitch. Guyer then hit his second homer of the game over nearly the same spot as the first one to score 3 more runs and make it 14-10.
Grangeville pushed across another run in the top of the seventh when Prairie couldn’t complete a potential double play but Sigler picked up a stirkeout to end the game.
Rieman pitched 5 innings and allowed 9 runs, only 2 earned, on 7 hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Grounders and pop-ups accounted for nearly all the outs as he got 10 groundball outs and 4 pop-up outs. 5 of the errors behind him were on ground balls with the fifth on a pop-up. Sigler pitched the final two innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 runs with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.
The Pirates meanwhile pounded out 14 hits led by Guyer who had the 2 homers and a single with 8 RBI. Chandler had 2 doubles and a single with 3 RBI while Sigler and Schumacher each had 3 singles. Baerlocher and Rieman each added a single.

Pirates win by forfeit
The Prairie baseball team won by forfeit over Culdesac Friday, April 17 at Cottonwood, when Culdesac lost a player to injurySteven Baerlocher gets ready to catch a pop fly in the Culdesac game. in the bottom of the second inning.
Culdesac had just 9 players available and elected not to continue when centerfielder Levi Parmer got hurt running into the centerfield fence on Eric Daly’s 2-run double. Parmer nearly made a spectacular catch on the play as the ball was in his mitt when he crashed into the fence. Parmer appeared to suffer cuts and abrasions and was taken to Lewiston for further testing. He was fortunate he hit one of the chainlink panels rather than one of the poles.
Culdesac had taken a 0-1 lead on Prairie in the first on 2 singles and a sacrifice fly.
Prairie took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Eric Daly singled to right and went to second when the ball got past the right fielder. Kyle Holthaus had a fly ball drop in for a single in left with Daly advancing to third. After Holthaus stole second, David Sigler grounded out to third to score Daly and move Holthaus to third. Holthaus scored on Ronnie Chandler’s sacrifice fly to center.
Culdesac tied the score in their half of the second when a throwing error put the Culdesac hitter on third base. A single scored the runner to make it 2-2.
In the bottom of the second Steve Baerlocher reached on an error and Joe Schumacher was walked. Kyle Daly doubled down the left field line to score Baerlocher then came Eric Daly’s double to the fence in right center. Schumacher and Kyle Daly scored on the play.
The score was 5-2 but the game will go into the books as a 7-0 forfeit (one run for each inning of a standard game).
Eric Daly pitched for the Pirates giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts.
Eric was the only Prairie player to get to hit more than once and he had a single and a double. Kyle Daly had a double and Holthaus and Conner Rieman each had a single.

After an out, Baerlocher hit a deep fly to left for a sacrifice fly that scored Chandler. Walks to Schumacher and Kyle Daly loaded the bases. A walk to Eric Daly forced home Rieman with a run and Holthaus then singled up the middle to score Schumacher and Kyle Daly. The ball got away from the centerfielder for an error allowing Eric Daly to advance to third and Holthaus to second. Sigler then picked up his fourth hit of the day with a single to left that scored both runners. Chandler followed with a single and Rieman singled home Sigler to make it 20-5.
Rieman then put LC out in order in the bottom of the 7th for the game.
