Pirates lose big to Orofino
The Prairie baseball team took a pounding from Orofino as they gave up 5 home runs and lost 5-16 at Cottonwood Friday, April 30.
Although there were several softball and baseball games scheduled last week, this was the only one played and much of it was played as a light rain fell.
Orofino jumped all over Prairie starter Seth Guyer for 8 runs in the first inning on 2 homers, a double, 3 singles, 4 walks and a hit batter.
The Maniacs clubbed 2 more homers in the second inning and 2 doubles and a single as they added 5 more runs.
Guyer lasted into the third inning and gave up a single and 2 walks before he was relieved by Conner Rieman. Rieman, facing a bases loaded situation, got out of the inning with no runs scoring.
He gave up 3 runs of his own though in the fourth as Orofino got to him for 2 doubles and their 5th homer of the game.
Prairie offense meanwhile was struggling to get baserunners as they had just one baserunner in each of the first 3 innings and none in the fourth.
Fortunately the one runner to reach base in the second inning touched them all as Joe Schumacher collected his first homer of the year on a shot over the right field fence.
In the fifth inning Orofino’s pitcher showed signs of tiring as he walked Silas Whitley and Troy Lorentz then Justin Schmidt beat out an infield single to load the bases. Devin Schmidt was hit by a pitch to force in Whitley.
With 2 outs and the bases still loaded, David Sigler singled to right to score Lorentz. A walk each to Guyer and Schumacher forced home the Schmidt brothers to give Prairie 5 runs in the game before the final out was recorded and the game ended on the 10-run mercy rule.
Prairie had just 5 hits in the game, a homer by Schumacher and a single each by Rieman, Devin Schmidt, Sigler and Justin Schmidt.
Orofino had 16 hits, 9 for extra bases.
The loss drops Prairie to 7-2 on the season with both losses coming to Orofino.
