American Cancer Society presents awards
Hugh Severs, Executive Director, and Nicol Barnes, Community Relationship Manager, American Cancer Society, Great West Division, presented two awards at St. Mary’s Hospital last week.  The SMHC team received an award for being the top fundraising team at the 6th Annual Clearwater to Salmon Rivers Relay for Life event in July.  Sr. Mary Kay Henry received the award as the top individual fundraiser after raising $4630.  The SMHC team raised $13,712 which included the SMHC and St. Gertrude Monastery’s contributions as Excalibur corporate sponsors.  The net from this year’s Relay totaled $53,000.
“Our team sponsored a number of in house fundraisers including a soup cook off, sale of specialty coffee drinks at last year’s Idaho County Fair and this year’s Relay, luminary sales, a BBQ lunch and pie sale,” said Arlene Baerlocher, SMHC team co-captain.  “The sale of our SMHC cookbooks also added to our bottom line.”
According to Baerlocher, Sr Mary Kay sent over 200 letters to friends, family members and out of state individuals requesting contributions.  Over 105 people responded with donations.  “Many of those donations came from out of state, but cancer knows no boundaries so all donations are always welcome,” said Baerlocher.“Sr Mary Kay has raised a significant amount of money for cancer education and research since her involvement in the Relay.”
Other co-captains of the SMHC team were Judy DeHaas and Collette Schaeffer. “We appreciate everyone’s support.  The contributions came in a number of different forms from making pies to purchasing a cookbook or luminary,” said DeHaas.  “Every little bit counts especially when it goes towards research and education.”
The SMHC Cookbooks contain over 500 recipes and are in their second printing.  They can be purchased for $14 by calling SMHC, 962-3251.
