Pirates awarded third place trophy after loss to Troy
The Prairie football team was awarded a third place trophy after falling 14-34 to Troy Saturday, Nov. 13 in the 1-A Division 1 state semifinals.
With the win Troy moves on to play Grace in the state championship game this Friday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome. Hagerman, which lost to Grace, also received a third place trophy.Justin Schmidt makes a wide open catch. In the background is Josh Roeper.
After getting clobbered by Troy in their regular season finale the Pirates were able to keep this game closer but were still unable to stop the Trojan offense while the Trojan defense made Prairie earn every yard they got.
Prairie took the opening kickoff and were able to pick up a pair of first downs but their drive stalled at the Troy 36 and they turned the ball over on downs.
Two plays later Troy’s Kade Hoskins turned a short pass into a 54 yard gain as Prairie defenders couldn’t seem to get a good hold on him for the tackle. 2 plays later the Trojans scored to take a 0-6 lead.
Following the kickoff Prairie again moved into Troy territory before having to punt.
This time is was Hayden Kanikkeberg, the Troy quarterback, who made the big play as he picked up 60 yards on a run around right end. 3 plays later Troy scored again and then recovered a fumble in the end zone for the 2-pointer to make it 0-14.
On the ensuing kickoff Troy kicked the ball out of bounds. The Pirates made them kick it over and Devin Schmidt returned the ball 20 yards to the Prairie 46.
Cody Schumacher picked up 5 yards on first down and Brock Heath went for 7 yards .
Beau Schlader then hooked up with Justin Schmidt for 23 yards down the left side to the Troy 19.
Heath picked up 7 yards around left end. After a false start penalty set them back 5 yards, Devin Schmidt gained 13 yards on a sweep around right end for a first and goal at the 4.
A holding penalty set the Pirates back to the 16 but a 12 yard run by Devin Schmidt put Prairie back at the 4 yard.
Two plays later Devin was able to stretch the ball over the goal line on fourth and 1 for the score. Devin then passed to brother Justin for the 2-pointer to cut the lead to 8-14.
Devin Schmidt lead blocks for Brock Heath on a sweep.Troy then took the kickoff and moved down to the Prairie 16 but Prairie then stiffened and stopped Marshall Williams twice for losses then Garrett Schmidt and Colton Nuxoll sacked Kanikkeberg for a 10 yard loss to set up fourth and 23 from the 29 yard line.
It looked like Prairie might be able to get the ball back with a chance to tie or go ahead before half but Kanikkeberg lofted a perfect pass down the right sideline to Williams who caught the pass for a touchdown. Hoskins then added the 2-pointer to make it 8-22.
Prairie responded with a touchdown drive of their own.
After Heath’s 19 yard kickoff return to the 35, Prairie moved the ball downfield. Schlader rolled out left and was able to connect with Seth Guyer for a 34 yard gain to the 28.
Devin Schmidt then picked up 12 yards up the middle to moved the ball to the 16.
Two runs by Heath set Prairie up with a first and goal at the 3.
Heath was hit in the backfield for a 6 yard loss but Prairie went right back to him and he picked up 8 yards to the 1 on the next play. Schlader then took the ball in on a quarterback sneak. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie trailing 14-22 with 25 seconds left in the half.
Down just 1 score it looked good going into the half but Troy broke the Pirates on the first possessions of the second half by each team.
Prairie had to kick off and Troy started from their own 35. On the first play Williams went up the middle and broke into the clear and then outraced the defenders to the end zone for a 65 yard scoring play. The 2-point try was stopped but Troy led 14-28.
Troy then tried an onside kick and appeared to recover the ball but Garrett Schmidt had called for a fair catch on the pop-up kick and was run into leading to a fair catch interference penalty. Troy had to re-kick from the 25 after the 15 yard penalty.
They kicked deep this time and nearly came up with the ball again as the kickoff was muffed with Justin Schmidt able to recover at the Prairie 34.
Prairie ran 8 straight running plays and picked up 4 first downs as they moved to the Troy 15.
Heath was then stopped for a 2-yard loss and Prairie tried a pass then was too long for Justin Schmidt. After Heath picked up 5 yards on third and 12, another pass attempt to Guyer in the end zone was just out of reach and Troy took over at their own 13.Devin Schmidt cuts to the inside to evade a tackler.
The Trojans then all but put the game away as they marched downfield and scored again, converting on a fourth and goal from the 6 to make it a 20-point lead as the third quarter ended.
Prairie responded by moving from their own 32 to the Troy 42 then started going backwards on 2 penalties and 2 sacks of Schlader that left Prairie facing a fourth and 37 from their own 31.
Devin Schmidt tried to run for it from punt formation but came up way short and Troy was able to run out the clock for the win.
The difference in the game was that Troy was able to get the big play when they needed it while Prairie didn’t. Troy proved they were the better team as they were able to win even with Devin Schmidt playing the whole game.
Devin Schmidt finished with 112 yards on 19 carries giving him 1869 yards on the season. Heath added 60 yards on 19 carries to give him 1006 on the season. This is the first time we’re aware of that Prairie has had two 1000 yard rushers in the same season.
Schlader completed 3 of 7 passes for 53 yards. Justin Schmidt caught 2 for 19 yards and Guyer caught 1 for 34.
Williams had 140 yards on 20 carries for Troy while Hoskins added 96 on 10 carries as they totaled 289 yards rushing.
Kanikkeberg was 4 for 6 passing for 132 yards.
Defensively Justin Schmidt led in tackles with 7 with Devin Schmidt collecting 6 tackles. Garrett Schmidt and Nuxoll each had 5 tackles and a ½ sack. David Johnson had 4 tackles. Tim Frei had 3½ tackles and Guyer had 3 tackles.
With the loss Prairie ends their season at 8-2 with both losses coming to Troy. During the senior class’s time in high school Prairie had a cumulative 37-6 record with first, second and third place finishes at state the last 3 years.
