Schlader connects for 8 threes at Nezperce
Beau Schlader connected on 8 three-pointers and scored 30 points to lead the Prairie Pirates to a 65-59 win at Nezperce Friday, Jan. 21.
We’re almost certain the 8 three-pointers is a school record. Beau Schlader defends Nezperce’s Jonathan Riggers. In the background are Justin and Devin Schmidt.
For the second straight night Prairie avenged one of their only two losses of the season and in the process won their 12th straight game since opening the season with a pair of losses.
Nezperce’s defense seemed more worried about Devin Schmidt going off big against them allowing Schlader plenty of open looks from the outside.
After Nezperce opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Schlader connected on 3 straight shots from beyond the arc to give Prairie a 9-3 lead. He added another in the opening quarter and David Johnson scored twice inside as Prairie took a 16-11 lead.
Schlader was fouled on his first attempt of the second quarter and converted 2 of the 3 free throw attempts to make it 18-11.
Nezperce then responded with 5 straight points to cut the lead to 18-16.
Schlader then connected on another trey, his 5th of the half, and Devin Schmidt scored twice inside before Schlader hit his 6th trey of the half to cap a 10-0 run and give Prairie a 28-16 lead.
Nezperce was able to pull within 8 by halftime at 31-23.
Schlader opened the third quarter with his 7th trey but Nezperce responded with 6 straight points to cut the lead to 34-29.
Prairie was able to respond every time Nezperce tried to rally and pushed the lead to 49-38 at the end of the third quarter as Schlader beat the buzzer with his 8th triple of the game.
Devin Schmidt comes to a jump stop at the low block as he looks to shoot against Nezperce. In the fourth quarter Schlader didn’t even attempt a 3 as the game situation called for the Pirates to work the clock and look for lay-ups as they looked to hold off the Indians.
Nezperce was able to cut the lead to 5 at 54-49 and 63-58 but could get no closer.
Johnson scored 3 baskets inside and Justin Schmidt added 2 more baskets while Prairie converted 4 of 7 free throws to hold the Indians at bay.
For his 30 points Schlader was 9 for 14 from the field, including 8 for 12 from long distance, and 4 for 6 at the line. Johnson added 12 points on 6 for 8 shooting. Seth Guyer scored 8, Devin Schmidt 7, Justin Schmidt 6 and Brock Heath 2.
Nezperce held a 27-29 rebounding edge with Johnson, Schlader and Justin Schmidt each collecting 6 rebounds.
Justin Schmidt had 3 steals and Devin Schmidt had 6 assists, mostly passing out of double teams. Schlader had 4 assists and Justin Schmidt had 3.
Prairie was 23 for 45 from the field, 51%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%. Nezperce was 20 for 46 from the field, 43%, and 12 for 22 at the line, 55%.
With the win Prairie improves to 12-2 on the season. They are 4-0 in division I league games and 7-0 in overall league games.
In the JV game the Indians continued their dominance over the Prairie JV as they rolled to a 32-63 win.
Nezperce led 0-10 and 2-18 in the first quarter and led 4-22 at the end of the period as Prairie hit just 1 of 9 shots and turned the ball over 8 times.
Prairie’s shooting didn’t get any better in the second period as they went 2 for 14 as Nezperce extended their lead to 14-38 by halftime.
Prairie got the lead down to 18 at 24-42 in the third quarter but Nezperce then went on a 2-14 run to squash any comeback hopes.
Marcus Higgins led the Pirates in scoring with 10 points with Seth Chaffee and Tyler Hankerson scoring 6 each. Troy Lorentz and Casey Danly scored 3 each and Jared Higgins and Chris Hoene 2 each.
Nezperce’s Justin Zenner did much of the damage for the Indians, hitting 12 of 16 shots and scoring 26 points.
Nezperce also held the rebounding edge at 28-37 with Chaffee and Lorentz leading Prairie with 6 rebounds each.
Hankerson, Marcus Higgins, Jared Higgins, Lorentz and Danly each had 2 steals.
Prairie was 9 for 44 from the field, 20%, and 13 for 22 at the line, 59%. Nezperce was 28 for 51 from the field, 55%, and 3 for 9 at the line, 33%.
