Pirates lose in 6th inning
The Prairie baseball team took a 10-6 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning at Clearwater Valley Friday, March 19, but couldn’t hold the lead as they gave up 6 runs and lost 10-12.Troy Lorentz connects for one of his 4 hits at C.V. last Friday.
The game wound up being their season opener due to a weather postponement  of a doubleheader against Troy that had been scheduled for Tuesday, March 15. They also had a postponement of their games scheduled for Saturday, March 20.
Prairie took the lead in the top of the first as Devin Schmidt walked, stole second and scored on Troy Lorentz’ single to right center.
Schmidt didn’t do as well on the mound though as he gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the inning on 2 walks and 2 singles.
He gave up another run in the second on a walk and 3 wild pitches as C.V. took a 1-4 lead.
Prairie had a big inning in the third as Schmidt led off with another walk and stole second. Lorentz then beat out an infield hit and Seth Guyer reached when the first baseman dropped the throw from the third baseman for an error. Schmidt scored on the play.
After an out, Silas Whitley walked to load the bases and Robert Nau walked to force home Lorentz. Shawn Seubert then walked to force home Guyer with the tying run. After a second out, Marcus Higgins singled to right to score Whitley. Schmidt then was walked again to force home Nau and Lorentz was walked to force home Seubert. Higgins then scored on a wild pitch to give Prairie an 8-4 lead.
Whitley was put in to pitch in the bottom of the inning and 3 errors led to a run by the Rams as Whitley gave up just a walk. He got out of a 1st and 3rd jam by picking the runner off first to end the inning.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning but Prairie added 2 runs in the fifth.
Seubert led off with a walk but was caught stealing. Garrett Schmidt followed with a walk and stole second. After a second out, Devin Schmidt singled to left center to score Garrett Schmidt. Lorentz then doubled to left to score Devin Schmidt and make it 10-4.
Garrett Schmidt reaches back to catch a pop fly that carried a little farther than he thought. Watching is Seth Guyer.Whitley gave up a second run in the fifth when C.V. got a leadoff triple from Shane Owens who then scored on a groundout to third to cut the lead to 10-5.
In the top of the sixth Prairie had just 1 baserunner as Seubert walked for the fourth time in the game, and were unable to score.
In the bottom of the inning Whitley got the first out then gave up an infield single. After an error and 2 walks which forced in a run, Guyer was brought in to pitch.
Guyer had trouble finding the plate as he walked his first batter then got a possible doubleplay grounder to short that could’ve got the Pirates out of the inning and still in the lead but the Pirates were only able to get the forceout at second. Another error and 3 walks later, CV had the lead at 10-12. Prairie finally got out of the inning when catcher Josh Roeper got to a passed ball and was able to throw back to Guyer covering home to get the runner trying to score from third.
In the top of the seventh C.V. got the first two hitters then Lorentz picked up his fourth hit of the game, a triple to deep right center. It’s possible he might’ve scored  a home run on the play but with 2 outs and down by two runs, coach Frank Bruno didn’t want to take the chance of ending the game on a play at the plate.
Guyer followed with a walk to put the tying run on but the rally died with the next hitter as C.V. won the game.
Lorentz had a big day at the plate with 4 of Prairie’s 6 hits in the game as he had a triple, double and 2 singles and walked the other time he came up. He also had 3 RBI in the game. Devin Schmidt and Higgins each added a single. Devin had 2 RBI and Nau, Seubert and Higgins each had 1 RBI.
Devin Schmidt gave up 4 runs on 2 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in his 2 innings. Whitley allowed 6 runs on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and 5 walks in his 3 1/3 innings. Guyer gave up 2 runs on no hits with 4 walks in his 2/3 of an inning.
With the loss Prairie is 0-1 in league play and overall.
