Pirates lose at Orofino
The Prairie baseball team finally got a game in jumping out to a 6-0 lead before succumbing 6-16 in a non-league game at Orofino Friday, April 8.Marcus Higgins pitched well for two innings at Orofino then inexplicably couldn’t find the strike zone in his third inning of work.
Troy Lorentz led off the game with a single and moved to second on a balk. He scored when Marcus Higgins followed with a double.
Garrett Schmidt then singled as Higgins moved to third. Another balk scored Higgins with Schmidt moving to second. Robert Nau and Cody Schumacher both walked to load the bases and Schmidt then scored on Tyler Hankerson’s sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.
Higgins started on the mound for the Pirates and caught a break on the leadoff hitter. He hit a fly ball to center that was dropped for an error by Hankerson but Hankerson picked up the ball and fired to second base to catch the runner as Sydney Camara made the tag.
A single and a sacrifice bunt followed by Higgins got out of the inning with a strikeout.
In the second inning Camara walked to lead off the inning and Lorentz doubled to right center to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Higgins blooped a single to right to score Camara with Lorentz moving to third. Garrett Schmidt then singled to right to score both runners and give Prairie a 6-0 lead.
Unfortunately that was also it for the Pirates offense as they had only 4 baserunners the rest of the game with only 1 more hit.
Higgins got some help in the bottom of the second from Orofino baserunners as he got only 1 out at the plate in a 1-2-3 inning.
An error put the leadoff hitter on and the next hitter flew out to center. The baserunner apparently didn’t think the ball would be caught and wound up getting doubled off first for the second out. The next batter walked but Higgins picked him off at first to end the inning.
In the third inning Clark Bruno singled up the middle but was forced at second by Silas Whitley. Lorentz then walked but the inning ended with no runs scored.
In the bottom of the third Higgins all of a sudden couldn’t find the strike zone as he walked 4 of the 6 batters he face and hit another. One of the only 3 strikes he was able to throw wound up getting crushed for a 3-run triple.
Lorentz came on in relief and also had trouble throwing strikes as he hit a pair of batters and walked two others as Orofino wound up taking the lead with an 8-run inning in which they got only 2 hits.
Lorentz gave up 5 more runs in the fourth on 2 walks, 2 hit batters and 2 singles before giving way to Shawn Seubert.
Seubert allowed 3 more runs in the fifth as the game ended on the 10-run rule.
Prairie had 7 hits in the game as Lorentz and Higgins each had a double and single. Garrett Schmidt added 2 singles and Bruno a single.
Higgins gave up 6 runs on 2 hits with 5 walks and a hit batsman in 2 plus innings.
Lorentz gave up 7 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks, 4 hit batters and 2 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.
Seubert gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with no walks and 2 strikeouts in 1 inning.
The Pirates are now 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
