finish season with win
The Prairie baseball team finished off their season with a 22-3 win over Timberline at Kamiah Tuesday, May 10.
The game originally was set to be played at Timberline and was subsequently moved to Cottonwood and Kooskia before settling at Kamiah.
Despite finishing with a 4-game winning streak the Pirates fell short of qualifying for the District Tournament as only the top 4 teams advanced.
Devin Schmidt finished off his high school career in style as he hit the first pitch of the game over the left field fence for his first home run of the season. 3 innings later he hit another homer to almost the same spot and added a pair of singles and a walk and scored 5 runs in the game.
The Pirates jumped on the Spartans for 5 runs in the first inning with Troy Lorentz following Schmidt by getting hit by a pitch. Seth Guyer then tripled to the fence in left to score Lorentz. Guyer then scored when Silas Whitley reached on an error. Whitley stole second and scored on Garrett Schmidt’s single. Schmidt advance to second on Shawn Seubert’s groundout, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
Timberline came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Guyer had some trouble finding the strike zone. He gave up a leadoff single and then 3 walks. Both runs came home on wild pitches with the runners on third.
He settled down after the first inning and gave up only 1 more hit with 4 walks and a hit batsman over the remaining 4 innings.
Prairie meanwhile kept up the pressure as Devin Schmidt led off for the second inning in a row and singled to left. He stole second and then third. Lorentz drew a walk and then Schmidt scored on Guyer’s sacrifice fly to right. The right fielder couldn’t make the catch allowing Guyer to reach with Lorentz going to third. Guyer stole second and then a wild pitch allowed Lorentz to score with Guyer advancing to third. Whitley walked and stole second. Garrett Schmidt grounded out to short but picked up the RBI as Guyer scored. Shawn Seubert also grounded out to short with Whitley scoring to make it 9-2.
The Pirates made it 15-2 after 3 innings with a 6-run third. Casey Danly hit a 1-out single up the middle and Devin Schmidt and Troy Lorentz each beat out infield singles to load the bases. Guyer hit a 2-run single up the middle. Guyer stole second to put runners on second and third. Whitley then struck out but the ball got past the catcher allowing him to reach first. The catcher’s throw to first then went wide allowing both Lorentz and Guyer to score with Whitley going all the way to third. Whitley then scored when Garrett Schmidt reached on an error. After a second out, Tyler Hankerson singled up the middle to score Schmidt but was throw out trying to advance to second.
Timberline picked up a run in the bottom of the third on a single and a couple of errors as Guyer struck out the other 3 hitters he faced in the inning.
Prairie added 2 more in the fourth to make it 17-3 as Danly drew a walk and Devin Schmidt hit a 2-run homer.
Prairie added 5 more runs in the fifth inning as Clark Bruno, subbed in for Hankerson drew a walk. Bruno moved to second on a passed bal and scored on Cody Schumacher’s single down the left field line. Danly singled and Devin Schmidt walked to load the bases. Lorentz then doubled to right center to score Schumacher and Danly and Lorentz scored on Guyer’s ground out to second to give Prairie their highest run total of the season at 22.
Guyer tossed a 2-hitter in the game with 9 strikeouts. He gave up 2 earned runs with 7 walks and a hit batsman.
The Pirates pounded out 13 hits led by Devin Schmidt who had 2 homer and 2 singles with 3 RBI. Guyer had a triple and a single and 5 RBI. Lorentz had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Hankerson had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Danly had a pair of singles. Garrett Schmidt had a single and 3 RBI while Schumacher had an RBI single.
Seeing as how it might be their final game, coach Frank Bruno made sure all the seniors got to play as Mike Karel started in right field although Garrett Schmidt hit for him in the lineup. Devin Schmidt, Guyer and Whitley are the other seniors on the squad.
With the win the Pirates end their season at 5-9 overall and 5-7 in league play.
