Dear Mother

I remember dressing up in your clothes,
Your shoes, your dress, even that one hat with the rose,
I would drag your purse and wear your pearls
Into the living room to give you a twirl,
And may I say thank you from the bottom of my heart
For making me your work of art.

Dear Mother,
I grew up and found your passion for sports,
No more dresses, I prefer my basketball shorts.
I would play on the court during a game,
Trying to live up to your name.
And may I say thank you from the bottom of my heart
For letting me know my part.

Dear Mother,
Where did the years go? It’s my senior year,
And my future seems so unclear.
But you helped me out up to the end,
You are surely my dearest friend.
And may I say thank you from the bottom of my heart
For giving me such a head start.

Dear Mother,
Someday, I again will wear your pearls,
And I will have some little girls.
I hope they are friends with me too,
And that they love me as I love you.
And may I say thank you so very much,
For your wonderful motherly touch.
