Pirates lose to Potlatch
Despite outgaining the Potlatch Loggers the Prairie Pirates lost 34-46 in a White Pine League game Friday, Sept. 16 at Cottonwood.Troy Lorentz heads for the end zone after picking up a Potlatch fumble on the bounce. The play gave Prairie a 20-18 lead.
Prairie totaled 344 yards of offense to 334 for the Loggers but a couple of huge kick returns and some untimely turnovers did in the Pirates.
A turnover led to the first score of the game as Potlatch intercepted Prairie’s first pass attempt of the game at the Pirate 37 leaving them a short field to travel for the touchdown.
Prairie answered back though with a touchdown drive of their own. Potlatch tried an onside kick with Cody Schumacher recovering the high bouncing kick and returning it 11 yards to the Potlatch 48.
The big play in the drive was a pass from Troy Lorentz to McCoy Hale that went for 21 yards. It might’ve gone for a score but Hale was tripped up at the Loggers 14. 4 plays later Lorentz went in from the 2 yard line for the touchdown. The 2-point try failed leaving the score knotted at 6-6.
That didn’t last long though as the Loggers’ Drew Magallon took the ensuing kicking at his own 15 and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown to quickly put the Loggers back on top 6-12.
Prairie was then forced to punt and Potlatch got another big return as Stephen Brent took Schumacher’s punt at the Logger 43 and returned it to the Prairie 20. Potlatch needed just 2 plays to add another touchdown and take a 6-18 lead. Fortunately Prairie was able to stop their 2-point tries.
Prairie was able to answer on their next possession thanks in large part to a 55 yard run ripped off by Schumacher who was finally hauled down by Potlatch defenders at the Loggers’ 16 yard line. That big run helped Schumacher to a varsity best 125 yards on 16 carries in the game.
That play eventually led to Lorentz’ second 2-yard run for a touchdown of the game. Schumacher then burst up the middle for the 2-pointer to cut the deficit to 14-18.
Less than a minute later Prairie added another touchdown to take the lead. Brent fumbled in the backfield and Lorentz picked up the ball on the bounce and took off for a 52 yard scoring play to make it 20-18.
Cody Schumacher carries the ball for some of his team high 125 yards. Behind him is Devon Watton with Josh Roeper to the right. The defense again stopped Potlatch on the Loggers next possession as they turned the ball over on downs at the Prairie 41.
Prairie gave the ball right back 2 plays later though on an interception with Potlatch again having a short field to travel for the score as they took over at the Prairie 31.
With the score Potlatch took a 20-24 lead and that’s where it stood at the half.
Neither team scored on their first possession of the second half but Potlatch got a 55 yard run for a score from Brent on their second possession to push their lead to 10 points at 20-30.
Prairie answered back with a long scoring drive as they took the ball from their own 30 and 12 plays later Garrett Schmidt went in from the 4 yard line for the score. Schmidt and Schumacher each had a 10 yard run in the drive and Hale had a 19 yard gain on the only pass play.
That score cut the deficit back to 4 points at 26-30 with 27 seconds left in the third quarter.
Potlatch got another long scoring run from Bent to push the lead to 12 as they finally converted on a 2-point try to make it 26-38.
On Prairie’s first play following the kickoff Lorentz connected with Hale down the right sideline for a 31 yard gain. Hale lost his footing at the 45 or he might have scored and that turned out to be a big play as 2 plays later Prairie turned the ball over on a fumble which Potlatch converted into another score to take a 20-point lead at 26-46 with 7:44 left in the game.
The Pirates were able to answer back with a touchdown of their own but took 5 minutes off the clock in doing so.
Along the way they had to overcome a third down and 17 after a holding penalty. Lorentz went back to pass on the play and wound up scrambling away from the pass rush and picking up 24 yards to set up a first down at the 12.
Two plays later Damian McWilliams took a pitchout around left end for 9 yards and the touchdown. Lorentz passed to Hale for the 2-pointer to cut the lead to 34-46.
Potlatch recovered the onside kick try at the Prairie 49 but were forced to punt. Prairie wound up taking over at their own 8 yard line and the clock ran out on them before they could get to midfield.
In addition to Schumacher’s 125 yards, McWilliams added 43 yards on 9 carries, Lorentz 40 on 13 carries, Schmidt 32 on 8 carries and Levi Lustig 25 on 10 carries as Prairie totaled 264 yards rushing on 56 attempts.
Lorentz completed 5 of 13 pass attempts with 2 interceptions for 80 yards. Hale caught 4 passes for 72 yards while Seth Chaffee caught 1 pass for 8 yards.
Potlatch had 307 yards rushing with Brent picking up 243 on 26 carries. Magallon completed just 1 of 5 pass attempts for 27 yards.
Dakota Wilson led the defense in tackles with 10 with Tim Frei adding 8 tackles. Schmidt had 7 ½ tackles while Josh Roeper had 6. Lorentz had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Hale had 3 ½ tackles and Lustig had 2 tackles.
With the loss Prairie falls to 1-2 on the season and in league play. Their next game is at Timberline this Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.

Go Green Group started at PHS
By Beka Bruner
The Go Green Group (GGG) is a group at Prairie High School that endeavors to accomplish recycling/environmental community service projects. So far, we have received two plastic bottle recycling bins and a recycling dumpster for our school.  We have also educated grades K-10 last year about why it is important to recycle and how to get involved.  The community will be able to participate in some of our projects along with the PHS student body.  The GGG would highly appreciate your support! Articles will be written in the future to inform you about our projects and our achievements
