Pirates rout Timberline
After a slow first quarter the Prairie Pirates exploded for 38 second quarter points and went on to mercy rule Timberline 58-8 Friday, Sept. 23 at Weippe.
Timberline received the opening kickoff and picked up a couple of first downs before a bad snap to the quarterback led to McCoy Hale recovering the ball at the Prairie 46.Levi Lustig pushes his way past a would-be tackler on the way to the game’s first touchdown.
Prairie was unable to move the ball and turned it over on downs. Timberline couldn’t move the ball either thanks in large part to a sack of the quarterback by Hale and Devon Watton..
Prairie took over on downs at their own 49 and Levi Lustig took a pitchout from quarterback Troy Lorentz around left end and went 51 yards for the game’s first points. The 2-point try came up short as Prairie led 6-0.
Prairie tried an onside kick but the ball wound up going out of bounds at the 50. Timberline took it from there and mixed in a couple of completed passes with some runs to move down to the Prairie 24.
On the next play Prairie was flagged for a penalty that set up the Spartans with a first and goal at the 7. Jadan Dahl wound up scoring on fourth down from the 4 yard line. Quarterback Joshua Stemrich ran in to the 2-pointer to give Timberline the lead at 6-8, 1 play into the second quarter.
Timberline’s ensuing kickoff went out of bounds giving the Pirates the ball at their own 35. The Pirates needed just 10 plays to retake the lead with 7 runs and 3 passes. A 10-yard pass from Lorentz to Cody Schumacher put the Pirates on the Timberline 19. On the next play Garrett Schmidt burst up the middle and into the clear and didn’t get tackled until after crossing the goal line. Lorentz completed a pass to Schumacher for the 2-pointer to make it 14-8.
Timberline’s next possession ended with a fumble at their own 17 that was recovered by Lustig.
Prairie was hit with a holding penalty but a 15 yard run by Schumacher helped make up for it and on the next play Lorentz hooked up with Tim Frei on the left side for a 14 yard touchdown play. The 2-point pass failed but Prairie led 20-8.
A holding penalty against Timberline forced them to punt with Prairie taking over on their own 28. On the next play Lorentz faked a handoff to a runner heading right and then handed off to Schumacher who went left. Schumacher appeared to be tackled as he turned upfield but was able to keep his feet and took off down the sideline for a 72 yard scoring play. Damian McWilliams added the 2-pointer on a sweep to the right to make it 28-8 with 2:40 left in the half.
Tim Frei, 5, and Kade Perrin tackle a Timberline ballcarrier. In the background is Seth Chaffee.A pass interference penalty against Prairie on Timberline’s next possession gave the Spartans a first down at their own 42 but they couldn’t move any farther and Seth Chaffee and Josh Roeper combined on a quarterback sack on fourth down for a 12 yard loss that gave Prairie the ball on the Timberline 29.
3 plays later Lorentz threw a short pass out to Schumacher on the left side and Schumacher took it all the way to the end zone. McWilliams again added the 2-pointer to make it 36-8 with 1:19 left in the half.
3 plays after the kickoff Prairie got the ball back again on a fumble with Watton recovering at the Timberline 45.
2 plays later Justin Schmidt, in his first game back after an injury had kept him on the sideline to this point, caught his first pass of the season. He took a short pass out on the left side and followed Josh Roeper toward the end zone until getting tackled at the 9 yard line.
After an incomplete pass, Schmidt caught a pass from Lorentz in the end zone as the clock ran out on the half. Lorentz passed to Frei for the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 44-8 halftime lead.
Prairie received the second half kickoff and after 4 plays had moved from their own 35 to the Timberline 44. On the next play Lorentz kept the ball and took it around the left side virtually untouched until being tackled into the end zone as he scored. Hunter McWilliams, who was in the game for big brother Damian who had injured his neck late in the first half, scored the 2-pointer to make it 52-8.
Timberline was forced to pun after their next possession and the ball rolled dead at the Prairie 11.
Prairie put mostly JV players on the field and they managed to drive the ball 89 yards for the game-ending score. Big plays in the drive were a 27 yard run around right end by Lucas Arnzen on fourth and 7, and runs of 14 and 18 yards by Hunter McWilliams.Justin Schmidt, in his first game back from injury, catches a touchdown pass as the first half ends.
With exactly 2 minutes left in the third quarter JV quarterback Rhett Schlader scored the game-ending touchdown from the 2 yard line. That made it 58-8 and the game was ended on the 45-point mercy rule.
For the game Prairie rolled up 356 yards rushing on 33 attempts with nobody carrying the ball more than 7 times.
Schumacher had 94 yards on 5 carries to lead the team with Lustig gaining 70 yards on 4 carries, Garrett Schmidt 53 yards on 6 carries, Lorentz 46 yards on 2 carries, Hunter McWilliams 45 yards on 7 carries, Arnzen 37 yards on 3 carries, and Damian McWilliams 11 yards on 5 carries.
Lorentz completed 6 of 11 passes for 102 yards. Justin Schmidt caught 2 passes for 45 yards, Schumacher 2 for 36, Frei 1 for 14 and Hale 1 for 7. Hale also sat out the second half with a neck injury.
The defense held Timberline to just 58 total yards of offense, 18 rushing on 33 attempts and 40 passing. Timberline passers were 6 for 10 for those 40 yards.
Garrett Schmidt led the defense with 9 tackles and a sack. Justin Schmidt had 6 ½ tackles. Frei had 4 tackles, Dakota Wilson had 3 ½ and Roeper had 3 and 1 ½ sacks. Hale had 1 ½ tackles, a fumble recovery and ½ a sack. Lorentz and Torin Dalgliesh had 1 ½ tackles each. Watton had 2 sacks and a fumble recovery. Damian McWilliams, Schumacher, Kade Perrin, Garrett Roush and Josh Zigler had 1 tackle each. Chaffee had ½ a tackle and ½ a sack.
With the win Prairie evens their record at 2-2 on the season. This week they host Kendrick at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.
