Pirates lose season finale
The Prairie Pirates couldn’t generate anything on offense until late in the fourth quarter as they fell 8-32 to Troy Torin Dalgliesh and Garrett Schmidt, 45, combine to tackle Troy’s quarterback for a big loss on fourth down that ended Troy’s first possession of the game.on Senior Night Thursday, Oct. 27 at Cottonwood.
With both schools’ volleyball squads in the state tournament the game was moved up a night to avoid conflict.
Troy received the opening kickoff and moved the ball down to the Prairie 16 but then the Pirates did something they couldn’t do in last year’s state semifinal game against the eventual state champions…they kept them from scoring on a possession. Torin Dalgliesh and Garrett Schmidt sacked quarterback Cody Self for a 10 yard loss on fourth down, giving Prairie the ball at the 29.
Prairie was able to pick up a first down thanks to a pair of runs totaling 24 yards by Justin Schmidt but they stalled out at midfield and were forced to punt.
Cody Schumacher’s punt went into the end zone for a touchback.
On the first play from scrimmage Troy’s Kaiden Hoskins went 60 yards before being knocked out of bounds. Prairie was then able to halt that drive as Troy’s fourth down pass attempt went incomplete.
Prairie gained just 2 yards before having to punt the ball back.
Troy took over at their 43 and Hoskins picked up 56 yards on the next play before being caught at the1 yard line. Troy scored on the next play but Prairie stopped the 2-pointer as Troy took a 0-6 lead.
Prairie managed 1 first down before being forced to punt again and Troy took just 3 plays to score with Nate Illi going 58 yards up the middle to make it 0-12.
Prairie again had to punt and Troy made it 3 touchdowns in 3 possessions with the help of a pass interference penalty on the Pirates. Hoskins wound up scoring from 25 yards out on a run to make it 0-18 as Prairie again stopped the 2-point try.
Troy also scored the first two times they had the ball in the second half while Prairie turned the ball over on downs each of the first 3 times they had the ball with only 1 first down picked up in 3 possessions.
Prairie finally stopped the Trojans on their third possession of the half, holding them on downs at the Prairie 14 yard line.
Unfortunately Prairie gave them the ball right back on a pass interception at the Troy 40 on a deep pass attempt from Troy Lorentz to Justin Schmidt.
Prairie was able to force a punt this time and took over at their own 20.
Josh Roeper crosses the goal line for a 2-point conversion. At left is Devon Watton who lined up in front of Roeper as fullback on the play. At right is Tyler Hankerson, 17.After an incomplete pass on first down, Justin Schmidt finally broke loose for a long gain, picking up 32 yards around left end before Illi tackled him at the Troy 48.
Prairie ran basically the same play again only this time Josh Zigler was able to block Illi on the play and Schmidt went 48 yards for Prairie’s only touchdown of the game.
On the extra point play Prairie went with a big boy backfield with 290 pound Devon “Maytag” Watton lined up at fullback in  front of 230 pound Josh Roeper. Roeper took the handoff and easily ran in the 2-pointer.
Troy recovered the onside kick attempt and then ran out the clock.
Thanks to 80 yards on his final 2 carries, Justin Schmidt wound up with 132 yards rushing on 19 attempts. Lorentz picked up 18 yards on 9 carries and Schumacher 5 yards on 3 carries. Lorentz was 0 for 9 passing with an interception.
Hoskins had 203 yards rushing for Troy on 12 carries and Illi added 104 yards on 12 carries as the Trojans had 352 yards rushing. Self was 4 for 10 passing for 101 yards.
Defensively Justin Schmidt had 13 tackles to lead the team. Garrett Schmidt had 7½ tackles. Dalgliesh had 6½ plus a sack. Kade Perrin had 6 tackles despite spraining his thumb early in the game. Tim Frei had 3½ tackles. Dakota Wilson had 3 tackles and a sack. Roeper had 3 tackles. Lorentz had 2½ tackles. Schumacher had 2 tackles. Garrett Roush had 1½ tackles and Casey Danly had 1 tackle.
With the loss Prairie ends the season with a 5-4 record, their 6th straight winning season but the first in 4 years where they did not advance to the state playoffs. This year’s seniors saw Prairie accumulate a 37-7 record while they were in high school, second only to last year’s seniors, who had a 38-6 record.
