Pirates lose opener
After a competitive first half, Grangeville broke open the game in the second half and went on to beat the Prairie Pirates 35-50 in the nightcap of the Idaho County Shootout Friday, Dec. 2 at Cottonwood.Seth Chaffee goes up for a shot in the Prairie boys opener against Grangeville.
Prairie scored first on a pair of free throws by Justin Schmidt, Prairie’s only returnee who saw much playing time last season.
After Grangeville tied it, Seth Chaffee scored to make it 4-2. 
Grangeville came back to take a 5-6 lead before Marcus Higgins connected on a 3-pointer to make it 8-6. Grangeville took the lead right back with a 3-pointer of their own and held a slim 10-11 lead at the end of the third quarter as freshman Lucas Arnzen scored for Prairie to pull the Pirates within 1.
Grangeville led 12-15 in the second quarter when Prairie put together a run. Chaffee connected on 3 of 4 free throws and Higgins hit his second 3-pointer of the game to give Prairie an 18-15 lead with 4:58 left in the half.
Unfortunately Prairie scored only 2 more points in the half, a bank shot by Schmidt, and Grangeville took a 20-23 lead at the break.
In the third quarter Grangeville scored the first 5 points to take an 8-point lead. Chaffee hit a 3-pointer and Arnzen connected from the elbow to cut the lead to 3 but Grangeville finished the third quarter with a 1-5 run to take a 26-33 lead after 3 quarters.
Grangeville then scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to all but put the game away.
Grangeville’s Seth Dreadfulwater scored 16 of his game high 25 points in the second half and actually outscored the Pirates by a point in the half.
Prairie struggled to find their shooting touch as they hit just 5 of 26 second half shots while Grangeville was hitting 11 of 25.
Schmidt getting into foul trouble didn’t help the Pirates either. He picked up his third foul with 14 seconds left in the first half and hit fourth came just a minute and a half into the third quarter.
Despite missing much of the third quarter, Schmidt still wound as Prairie’s leading scorer with 11 points. Chaffee added 8 points, Higgins 7, Arnzen 4, Troy Lorentz and Rhett Schlader 2 each and Josh Zigler 1.
Prairie held a 40-32 rebounding edge with Schmidt leading the team with 12 rebounds. Zigler added 10 and Higgins had 7.
Zigler had a pair of steals and Higgins had 5 assists.
Prairie was 11 for 43 from the field, 26%, and 10 for 20 at the line, 50%. Grangeville was 21 for 52 from the field, 40%, and 6 for 11 at the line, 55%.
With the loss Prairie is 0-1 on the season.
