Pirates lose at Lapwai
The Prairie Pirates finished up a tough pre-Christmas slate with another loss, this time at Lapwai Justin Schmidt drives past a Lapwai defender along the baseline.by a score of 51-67 Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Lapwai jumped out to a 0-11 lead in the first quarter. Seth Chaffee ended the drought with a basket at the 2:51 mark of the quarter and Prairie actually outscored the Wildcats 9-2 and finished the quarter trailing just 9-13. Marcus Higgins and Justin Schmidt each added a basket and Troy Lorentz connected on a 3-pointer.
Rhett Schlader opened the second quarter scoring with a driving lay-up and converted the free throw when he was fouled to pull the Pirates within 1 at 12-13.
Lapwai scored the next 5 points though and led 19-26 at halftime. Schlader had 6 of Prairie’s 10 second quarter points.
A 3-pointer and a basket by Chaffee helped keep the Pirates within 10 points through the first half of the third quarter but Lapwai bombed in four 3-pointers in the final 3:36 of the quarter to take a 29-52 lead into the final frame.
Prairie outscored Lapwai 9-3 over the first 3 minutes of the fourth quarter and that prompted the Lapwai coach to put his starters back on the floor even though they still led by 20.
Prairie had some momentum going though and even against the Lapwai starters were able to cut the lead down to 13 at 51-64 as Lorentz scored 7 fourth quarter points and Schmidt added 6.
Lapwai scored the final 3 points of the game for the final 16-point margin.
Schmidt and Chaffee each had 12 points to lead the Pirates in scoring while Lorentz had a season high 10 points. Schlader scored 7, Higgins 5, Lucas Arnzen 3 and Josh Zigler 2.
Lapwai dominated on the boards 27-44. Schmidt led Prairie with 9 rebounds.
Chaffee had 3 steals while Lorentz had 2. Marcus Higgins had 4 assists while Jared Higgins had 3 and Schlader had 2.
Prairie was 20 for 50 from the field, 40%, and 7 for 20 at the line, 35%. Lapwai was 27 for 57 from the field, 47%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.
With the loss Prairie is 0-6 on the season and won’t play again until Thursday, January 5 at Highland.
In the JV game Prairie pulled out a 55-43 win to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Lapwai took an early 2-6 lead but Lucas Arnzen scored 7 straight points to rally Prairie to a 9-8 lead. 
Dylon Bruegeman added a long 2-pointer and a free throw to make it 12-9 at the quarter break.
A 3-pointer each by Bryson Higgins and Tyler Hankerson got Prairie going in the second quarter. Higgins scored 7 and Hankerson 8 in the quarter as Prairie took a 31-15 lead.
Lapwai scored the final 4 points of the half to cut the lead to 31-19.
Prairie was able to match Lapwai’s scoring in the third quarter and keep them from building a rally. They still led by 12 with 2:17 left in the third but ended the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 45-27 lead into the fourth. Hankerson had 4 of those points while Mason Dalgliesh scored the final basket of the quarter.
A 6-2 run to open the fourth gave the JV’s their biggest lead of the game at 51-29 with 5:46 left.
Lapwai was able to outscore the Pirates the rest of the way but mainly because Prairie’s emphasis was more on using as much clock as possible.
Hankerson wound up with 14 points to lead the JV’s in scoring with Bryson Higgins adding 11, Bruegeman 9, Arnzen 7, Danly 6, Dakota Wilson 4 and Tanner Ross and Dalgliesh 2 each.
Prairie held a 34-24 rebounding advantage with Arnzen grabbing 7 rebounds while Bruegeman and Ross had 6 each.
Hankerson had 3 steals while Ross had 2 and Jared Higgins had 4 assists while Bryson Higgins had 3.
Prairie was 21 for 39 from the field, 54%, and 11 for 19 at the line, 58%. Lapwai was 20 for 52 from the field, 38% and a dismal 3 for 12 at the line, 25%.
