Zephyrs split with Orofino
The Camas Prairie Zephyrs American Legion baseball team split a pair of games at Orofino Sunday, June 24.
They lost the opener 3-4 but came back to win the second game 8-5.
In the opener Troy Lorentz got the Zephyrs off to a good start with a leadoff single, stole second, stole third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Alex Koberstein.
In the fourth inning the Zephyrs added a pair of runs as Jasper Sabatino reached on what should’ve been an inning ending double play. He stole second and scored on Tanner Haage’s triple. Haage then scored on James Somelot’s single to give the Zephyrs a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth Orofino finally got to starting pitcher Michael Eades for an unearned run as 2 errors and a walk led to a score. Eades still had a no-hitter going at that point.
In the fifth Orofino finally broke up the no-hitter and came up with a 3-run rally that gave them the lead.
The Zephyrs were unable to score after the 4th and wound up losing.
Lorentz and Sabatino each had a double and single in the game while Haage had a triple and Isaiah Burns and Somerlot each had a single.
Eades pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs on just 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks. Burns pitched the final 1 1/3 innings allowing no runs on no hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
In the second game Camas Prairie jumped all over Orofino in the first inning with a 6-run outburst. A double, single, single, error, walk, error and double came from the first 7 hitters with 6 runs scoring. The only out came when Koberstein was thrown out at home and after crashing into the Orofino catcher had to be taken to the hospital in Lewiston where at last report he was in fair condition and had been taken out of  ICU. Coach David Shears said it was a fluke play where the throw was up the third base line and took the catcher right into Koberstein.
Orofino was held scoreless until the fourth inning when they came up with a pair of runs on a walk, 2 errors and a single.
In the bottom of the 6th Orofino cut the lead to just 1 with a 3-run rally on a single, 2 doubles and another single.
Camas Prairie picked up a couple of insurance runs in the top of the 7th as Silas Whitley led off by reaching on an error. Eades followed with a walk. Each runner was able to advance to third and eventually score on a passed ball.
Burns then came on to pitch the bottom of the 7th and allowed a 2-out walk before ending the game with a strikeout.
Eades pitched 6 innings allowing 5 runs on 8 hits with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts. Burns pitched 1 inning allowing no runs, no hits, 1 walk and had 2 strikeouts.
Eades had 3 singles and an RBI while Burns had 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Blackmer had a double and Koberstein a single.
From Cottonwood Lorentz reached base twice on a dropped fly ball in right and was hit by a pitch, and scored a run. Whitley reached on an error and scored in his only plate appearance of the second game. He was 0 for 2 with a sacrifice in the opening game.
Also getting playing time were Clark Bruno and Nathan McElroy.
