Pirates win third straight game
The Prairie Pirates picked up their third straight win as they knocked off Clearwater Valley 58-12 in a game shortened by the 45-point rule Friday, Sept. 28 at Cottonwood.Hunter McWilliams follows lead blockers Seth Chaffee, 66, and Kade Perrin, 44, on what turned out to be the game-ending touchdown. Also shown are Frank Spencer, 76, and Garrett Schmidt.
The Pirates picked up an extra home game and got to host a White Pine League doubleheader when smoke in the valley forced C.V. and Kamiah to move their games to Cottonwood.
The Prairie-C.V. game had a 6 p.m. start time and may have been moved up earlier if there’d been time to get the field ready as the yard lines had to be repainted to get ready and the decision to move the games didn’t come until Friday afternoon. Prairie also wore their white road jerseys as C.V. was technically the home team.
Once the game started Prairie wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Seth Chaffee caught a short kickoff at the Prairie 45 and returned it to the C.V. 48.
After an incomplete pass, Garrett Schmidt picked up 33 yards over the right side. On the next play Lucas Arnzen took the ball 15 yards around the left side for a touchdown just 23 seconds into the game. Hunter McWilliams ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
C.V. picked up a first down on their possession before turning the ball over on downs at their 46.
Prairie was able to move the ball down to the 11 before their drive stalled with C.V. taking over on downs.
The Rams had a third and 1 at the 20 when the Pirates’ defense stiffened. Mason Dalgliesh and Schmidt combined to stop C.V.’s Jacob Farmer for a 1 yard loss. C.V. then went for it on 4th and 2 deep in their own territory and Kade Perrin and Schmidt hit Farmer in the backfield for a 3 yard loss as Prairie took over at the C.V. 16.
Higgins connected with Schmidt for a 3 yard gain on first down then McWilliams went over the left side for a 12 yard gain to within a foot of the goal line. Schmidt powered his way in on the next play. McWilliams again added the 2-pointer for a 16-0 Prairie lead.
On C.V.’s next possession Matt Schwartz sacked quarterback Hahots Shebala for a 10 yard loss on first down and Schmidt and Arnzen combined to sack him for a loss of 5 yards on third down forcing C.V. to punt from their own 5.
Garrett Schmidt tries to sack C.V.’s quarterback before he can make the throw. At right is Matt Schwartz.Austin Reed got off a short punt of just 19 yards as Prairie took over at the C.V. 24.
On first down Higgins found Chaffee wide open down the left side for a 24 yard touchdown pass. The 2-point try failed as Prairie took a 22-0 lead.
C.V. fumbled the ball away at their own 31 on the next play but Prairie fumbled it right back on the next play.
The Rams couldn’t take advantage though as they turned the ball over on downs when Tanner Ross and Schmidt tackled Dillon Fisher for a 2 yard loss on a 4th and 4 pass play.
Prairie took over at the C.V. 36 and took 5 plays to score. Arnzen picked up 15 on a 3rd and 3 sweep around left end to move the ball to the 14. Schmidt then went over the left side for 13 yards to the 1. Higgins ran a quarterback sneak on the next play for the touchdown. He then completed a pass to Chaffee for the 2-point conversion to make it 30-0 with 7:37 left in the half.
C.V. finally got some offense going on their next possession thanks to some big pass plays as they had to start their drive at their own 13 after a couple of penalties. A 37 yard pass play to Fisher, a 20 yard run by Shebala and a 15 yard pass to Reed were the big plays with Reed scoring on his pass play. The 2-point try failed as Prairie still led 30-6.
Prairie came right back with a score of their own after a slow start. C.V. tried an onside kick but it went out of bounds at the Prairie 48.
3 plays later Prairie was facing a 4th and 10 when Higgins rolled left on a pass play. He couldn’t find anybody open so scrambled back to a wide open right side of the field for a 28 yards gain to the C.V. 24.
2 plays later McWilliams appeared to have scored a touchdown from the 17 but a holding penalty at the 11 called it back.
Arnzen picked up 16 on the next play to set up first and goal at the 5 and McWilliams crossed the goal line on the next play for the second time on the drive. This time it counted and Higgins pass to Chaffee again for the 2-pointer to make it 38-6.
Prairie got the ball right back when C.V.’s Isaac James fumbled the kickoff return with Casey Danly recovering at the C.V. 14.
3 plays later Arnzen went over the left side for 12 yards and another Prairie touchdown. Calvin Hinkelman ran in the 2-pointer to make it 46-6 with 1:21 left in the half.
C.V. went to the pass to try and add another score before halftime but misfired on 2 passes. After a third down run lost yardage they went for it on fourth down and Ross intercepted at the C.V. 47.Lucas Arnzen leaves a trail of C.V. defenders in his wake as he scores a touchdown.
Prairie then ran the time out to go to half.
C.V. got a great kickoff return of 47 yards to start the second half with Hunter McWilliams making the tackle at the Prairie 43.
C.V. moved down to the Prairie 29 before Hinkelman intercepted a Shebala pass at the Prairie 25.
With a 40-point lead Prairie put in their second string offense.
They were able to pick up a first down before being forced to punt.
C.V. took over at their own 40 and were able to mount a scoring drive as they went to the pass again. A completion of 37 yards put them deep in Prairie territory at the 16.
On 4th and 8 from the 14 Fisher got open for a touchdown pass. The 2-point try failed to make it 46-12.
After another short kickoff Perrin took the ball at the Prairie 40 and returned it 2 yards.
Prairie couldn’t move the ball on their first 3 plays and faced a 4th and 10. Backup quarterback Chaffee  was able to connect with Hinkelman for 19 yards and a first down and C.V. was called for roughing the passer which added another 15 yards to the C.V. 24.
A 4 yard loss and a false start penalty had Prairie facing 2nd and 19 from the 33. Chaffee again connected with Hinkelman for 17 yards and a horsecollar tackle by C.V. led to another 8 yards and first and goal at the 8.
On second down from the 4 after another C.V. penalty, Hinkelman carried the ball in for another Prairie touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Priarie led 52-12 with 1:22 left in the third quarter.
C.V. tried running the ball on their next possession and had runs of 20 and 26 yards and got down to the Prairie 15. On fourth and 2 at the 16 Reed picked up what would’ve been a first down but fumbled the ball.
Chaffee was given the recovery at the 12 yard line even though the ball was actually still loose when the whistle blew.
The first string offense went back in with an eye toward ending the game. Schmidt picked up 14 yards on a power run up the middle where he ran over and through a couple of tacklers.
Two plays later Arnzen picked up 26 yards around the left side.
