Pirates lose big to Kamiah
The Prairie football team’s winning streak came to an abrupt halt last Friday, Oct. 5 as they were thumped by Kamiah 14-60 at Cottonwood.
The undefeated Kubs are the second ranked team in the state and played like it with 3 one-play touchdown drives a 2-play drive and also 1 defensive score and two special teams scores.Lucas Arnzen follows lead blocker Matt Schwartz on a running play.
Prairie received the opening kickoff but were forced to punt after 3 plays.
Kamiah then took just 2 plays to go 58 yards for the game’s first touchdown. After an incomplete pass Tyler Williamson ran a reverse from his end position back around the left side for the score.
On Prairie’s next possession Garrett Schmidt picked up a first down with a 12-yard run but Prairie fumbled the ball away on the next play.
Kamiah appeared headed for another score as quarterback Michael Eades was picking up big yardage but Mason Dalgliesh was able to strip the ball away from him and Hunter McWilliams recovered at the Prairie 4 yard line.
Prairie had to punt the ball back and Kamiah took over at the Prairie 32.
On the second play Kamiah lined up Reed York all by himself and the Prairie coaches were trying to get a defender on him and then tried to call timeout.  The timeout wasn’t granted as Kamiah ran the play and York caught the pass and moved down to the 8. When Prairie head coach Ryan Hasslestrom asked why they weren’t granted the timeout he was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Kamiah wound up scoring their second touchdown 2 plays later.
Prairie’s next possession started well as Marcus Higgins hooked up with Seth Chaffee for a 17 yard gain. Unfortunately his next pass attempt to Chaffee was intercepted by Williamson who took the ball back 41 yards for a touchdown to make it 0-18.
Kamiah also intercepted the next pass thrown by Higgins and returned it to the 50. On the next play Kevin Hill ran a sweep to the right and went 50 yards for a touchdown.
Hunter McWilliams scored Prairie’s first touchdown of the game on this run around left end. After another Prairie punt, Eades went 67 yards on Kamiah’s first play and the Kubs finally added a 2-point conversion to make it 0-32 with 33 seconds left in the first quarter.
Prairie had to punt again and this one was partially blocked and traveled just 12 yards downfield. Kamiah took over at the Prairie 44 and Hill scored on the next play to make it 0-38 just 25 seconds into the second quarter.
On Prairie’s next possession a 14 yard gain on a pass play to Schmidt got called back on a penalty and Prairie wound up punting again.
Kamiah put in their second unit and they fumbled the ball away on the first play after the punt with Chaffee recovering at the Prairie 41.
Against the second team defense Prairie was finally able to mount a drive as Higgins connected with Schmidt for an 19 yard gain and then the Pirates were able to run the ball down the field with Hunter McWilliams covering the final 10 yards for Prairie’s first score of the game. Higgins passed to Chaffee for the 2-pointer to make it 8-38.
Kamiah answered back with an 8-play scoring drive after a 38 yard kickoff return. They added the 2-pointer to make it 8-46.
Prairie took over after the kickoff at their own 35 after Kamiah’s kick went out of bounds.
Higgins was able to connect with Tyler Hankerson deep downfield for a 61 yard gain that set Prairie up on the 4 yard line. Schmidt went up the middle on the next play for a touchdown that made it 14-46 which is where the score stood at the half.
The only time the Kamiah offense got on the field in the third quarter was for a 2-point try but they were still able to score the 2 touchdowns needed to end the game on the 45-point rule.
Williamson ran back the second half kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Hill added the 2-point conversion on a run.
Prairie was forced to punt from their own 10 yard line on the ensuing possession and Spencer Crane blocked Higgins’ punt and then recovered the ball in the end zone for the game-ending touchdown.
Prairie generated just 159 yards of offense, 54 rushing and 105 passing. Schmidt led the running attack with 22 yards on 7 carries while McWilliams added 21 yards on 5 carries.
Higgins completed 5 of 16 pass attempts with 2 interceptions, for 105 yards. Chaffee had 2 catches for 27 yards, Schmidt 2 for 17 and Hankerson 1 for 61.
Kamiah had 329 yards rushing and 51 passing. Hill gained 107 yards on 5 carries, Williamson 102 yards on 5 carries and Eades 85 yards on 4 carries.
Defensively Kade Perrin had 3 tackles. Hunter McWilliams had 2½ tackles plus a fumble recovery. Schmidt and Matt Schwartz had 2½ tackles each. Chaffee had 2 tackles and a fumble recovery. Damian McWilliams had 2 tackles. Lucas Arnzen had 1½ tackles plus a sack. Dalgliesh had 1½ tackles and Hankerson had 1 tackle.
With the loss Prairie drops to 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in league play. This week they host Lakeside of Plummer-Worley in a non-league game Friday at 7 p.m. at Cottonwood.
