Pirates overwhelm Lakeside
The Prairie football team had little trouble with an overmatched Lakeside squad as they rolled to a 46-0 win in a game that was stopped at halftime on the 45-point mercy rule Friday, Oct. 12 at Cottonwood.Kade Perrin gains yardage after a catch against Lakeside. Also shown is Frank Spencer, 76.
Lakeside tried an onside kick on the opening kickoff but Damian McWilliams caught the ball and returned it 10 yards to the Lakeside 40.
On the first play from scrimmage Marcus Higgins connected with Seth Chaffee for 38 yards to set up first and goal at the 2. Garrett Schmidt scored the touchdown on the next play and Lucas Arnzen added the 2-point conversion.
Lakeside’s first 3 offensive possessions ended in turnovers and netted just 2 yards of offense.
Matt Schwartz recovered a fumble at the Lakeside 35 on Lakeside’s 2nd play from scrimmage.
A 24 yard pass from Higgins to Kade Perrin set up a first and goal at the 10 and Hunter McWilliams went around left end for the touchdown on the next play. Higgins passed to Schmidt for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
On Lakeside’s second possession Jake Rowland intercepted a pass on Lakeside’s 2nd play at the Prairie 48 and returned it to the Lakeside 39.
Higgins connected with Chaffee for 27 yards down the right side. Hunter McWilliams ran another sweep around the left side but was stopped just short of the goal line. Higgins ran a quarterback sneak for the score. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie up 22-0.
Lakeside’s third possession lasted just 1 play as they fumbled with Rowland recovering the fumble at the Lakeside 26.
Prairie took 6 plays to add a fourth touchdown with Perrin catching a 3-yard pass from Higgins for the score. Higgins ran in the 2-pointer to make it 30-0 with 6:57 still left in the first quarter. It looked like the Pirates might threaten the 55 point first quarter they had at Genesee in 2009.
On Lakeside’s fourth possession the Knights managed to recover their own fumble but for a 7 yard loss. Another loss left them facing a 4th down and 21 at their own 28.
The Knights then ran a fake punt play with punter Matt Stensgar completing a pass for 25 yards and a first down to Garth Dole.
Unfortunately for the Knights they couldn’t move the ball any further and had to punt anyway.
Prairie took over at their own 28 and Jake Bruner went in at quarterback for the first time since getting injured in the Lapwai game.
Prairie stuck to the running game for the first 4 plays with Arnzen gaining 25 on a sweep and 10 more on a run over the right side. Schmidt added 17 more to set the Pirates up at the 15.
Bruner then tried his first pass and connected with Higgins for 8 yards. After 2 incompletions, Schmidt picked up a first down on a 4 yard run to the 3. Arnzen then scored on the next play and Hunter McWilliams added the 2-pointer to make it 38-0 with 1:48 left in the first quarter.
Seth Chaffee made this catch for a 38 yard gain on the first play from scrimmage for the Pirates.Rowland then kicked off to the 4 yard line and Lakeside wound up starting at the 18.
The Knights finally put together a couple of first downs as they moved out to the 42 before a fumble hurt them again. They were able to recover after a 5 yard loss.
They tried another fake punt but this time the pass went incomplete and Prairie took over at the 37.
Damian McWilliams picked up 16 yards on a sweep and Arnzen added 13 more to set up first and goal at the 8.
Hunter McWilliams gained 4 yards then Bruner tried to pass to Isaiah  Shears but Lakeside intercepted the pass in the end zone.
Lakeside took over at the 20 and picked up a first down on another fake punt. They faced another fourth down after netting no yards on 3 plays but this time were stopped for no gain and Prairie took over at the Lakeside 29.
Bruner picked up 13 yards on first down. Damian McWilliams then got the ball jarred loose but Dakota Wilson recovered for a net gain of 2 yards.
On the next play Bruner tried to pass and Lakeside was called for defensive holding. The referee got defensive holding mixed up with offensive holding and marked off the penalty from the spot of the foul instead of from the line of scrimmage. Prairie wound up with the ball at the 2 instead of the 8 and Damian McWilliams scored on the next play. Bruner passed to Higgins for the 2-pointer to make it 46-0 with 5 minutes left in the half.
Lakeside was forced to punt on their next possession but got the ball right back when Prairie, with the third unit in the game, fumbled the ball.
Prairie got the ball back 4 plays later when Rowland made his second interception of the game at the Prairie 15 and returned it to the 27.
Damian McWilliams picked up 26 yards on first down but 2 plays later Prairie fumbled again.
An illegal block set Lakeside back 10 yards and then Rowland made his third interception on what turned out to be the final play of the game.
Prairie didn’t have any impressive offensive numbers due to the short fields they were working with. They picked up 174 yards rushing on 24 attempts led by Arnzen who had 58 yards on 7 carries. Damian McWilliams had 46 yards on 4 carries. Hunter McWilliams had 28 yards on 4 carries and Schmidt had 23 yards on 3 carries.
Higgins was 5 for 7 passing for 107 yards. Bruner was 1 for 4 with an interception for 8 yards.
Chaffee caught 3 passes for 80 yards. Perrin caught 2 for 27 and Higgins 1 for 8.
Defensively Rowland had 1 tackle plus 3 interceptions and a fumble recovery. Matt Schwartz had 2 tackles plus a sack and a fumble recovery. Schmidt and Hunter McWilliams each had 4 tackles. Arnzen had 3½ tackles. Perrin had 2½. Shears had 2. Damian McWilliams had 1½. John Mager, Tyler Hankerson and Bruner had 1 each and Wilson, Calvin Hinkelman and Chaffee and ½ each.
With the win Prairie improves to 4-3 on the season. They are 2-2 in league play. This Friday they host Troy on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
