22 out for PHS boys basketball
For the second year in a row the Prairie High School Boys Basketball team will be a youthful squad with 22 players turned out.The PHS boys team runs a drill during practice last week. Shooting at right is Seth Chaffee with other players from right being Marcus Higgins, Rhett Schlader, Lucas Arnzen and Tyler Hankerson. In the background is head coach Teel Bruner.
Last year there were only 2 seniors while this year there are just 3: Marcus Higgins, Seth Chaffee and Summit transfer Dan Wemhoff. Higgins and Chaffee are returning starters.
Two more returnees who started a lot last year are sophomores Rhett Schlader and Lucas Arnzen. Schlader, who broke his arm in the Lapwai game during football season, has been a full participant in practice and will be ready to go for the season opener Nov. 27.
Juniors on the squad this year are Tyler Hankerson, Jared Higgins, Dylan Bruegeman and Casey Danly. Danly, who was injured in a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago still has a walking cast but should be available early in the season.
Other sophomores include Tanner Ross, Bryson Higgins and Mason Dalgliesh.
Freshman this year are Jake Bruner, Appy Enriquez, Devyn Bruegeman, Daniel Mager, Calvin Hinkelman, Bobby Hood, Justin Schumacher, Lance Goeckner, Isaiah Shears and Brandon Higgins. Bruner, who injured his collarbone in the final football game, expects to be ready for the season opener and was practicing with the varsity.
The White Pine League looks to be tough again this year and there’s not an easy win anywhere. Genesee, Troy, Lapwai, C.V., Potlatch and newcomer Kamiah along with Prairie make up the Division 1 portion of the league with Genesee, Lapwai, C.V. and Kamiah all appearing in the state tournament last year.

Pirates named to all-league team
The White Pine League All-Conference Team was announced last week and although Prairie had no first-team honorees this year Garrett Schmidt was named to the second team at linebacker.
Schmidt also received honorable mention at running back while Marcus Higgins received honorable mention at receiver and Matt Schwartz received honorable mention on both the offensive and defensive lines.
