Pirates split first two games
The Prairie boys basketball managed to come out on both ends of lopsided games last week. In their opener against Highland they used pressure defense and transition offense to roll to an 80-17 win. They followed that up by getting rolled over by Nezperce 39-63 as the Indians bombed in nine three-pointers. Both games were played at Cottonwood.
Vs. Highland
In the opener on Tuesday, Nov. 27, Prairie forced 17 first quarter turnovers from the Huskies and raced out to a 17-1 lead on their way at a 25-5 score by the end of the quarter.Lucas Arnzen shoots against for 2 of his 22 points against Highland. At left is Tyler Hankerson.
Many of those 17 turnovers were converted into easy baskets or free throws as Prairie attempted 12 first quarter free throws, making 9.
Lucas Arnzen scored 9 first quarter points including a 5 for 6 performance at the line.
Prairie backed off on the full court pressure but still forced 7 more turnovers in the second quarter. Highland kept fouling as well as Prairie attempted another 11 free throws in the period, making 6.
Dylan Bruegeman came off the bench to score 6 points in the second quarter, 4 on transition lay-ups.
Prairie led 46-10 at the half.
The third quarter was more of the same as Prairie outscored Highland 18-3 with hardly any of the 9 baskets scored being something other than a lay-up.
With a 64-13 lead after 3 quarters the fourth quarter was played with a running clock that stopped only when there was a timeout called.
Prairie had scoring runs of 12, 15, 14 and 18 points in the game.
Arnzen wound up scoring 22 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Rhett Schlader also outscoring the Husky team with 19 points. Bruegeman was also in double figures with 14 with Marcus Higgins scoring 9, Tyler Hankerson 6 and Seth Chaffee and Jared Higgins 5 each.
Prairie controlled the boards 47-35 with Arnzen grabbing 15 rebounds to lead the team. 
Prairie forced 40 turnovers in the game, 29 by way of steals. Dan Wemhoff had 7 steals while Hankerson had 5 and Jared Higgins had 4. Jared Higgins also had 6 assists.
The Pirates were 32 for 64 from the field, 50%, and 15 for 24 at the line, 63%. Highland was 7 for 45 from the field, 16%, and 2 for 7 at the line, 29%.
The JV game was just as lopsided as Prairie rolled to a 61-8 win.
Dylon Bruegeman scores on a lay-up against Highland. Also shown is Tanner Ross.Isaiah Shears and Tanner Ross were the big scorers in the first quarter as Prairie tolled to a 20-3 lead with 7 and 6 points respectively but from then on it was the Bryson Higgins scoring show.
Higgins scored just 2 points in the first quarter but scored 8 in the second, 11 in the third and hit the game’s only 3-pointer in the fourth to wind up with 24 points.
Shears and Ross also wound up outscoring the Huskies with 13 and 10 points respectively. Mason Dalgliesh added 4 points with Appy Enriquez and Daniel Mager scoring 3 each and Justin Schumacher 2.
The JV’s dominated the boards 46-24 with Ross grabbing 11 rebounds and Shears 10. Devin Bruegeman added 6 rebounds.
Higgins added 8 steals and 5 assists.
The JV’s were 27 for 60 from the field, 45%, and 5 for 16 at the line, 31%, while Highland was 3 for 33 from the field, 9%, and 2 for 5 from the line, 40%.

Vs. Nezperce
In the game Friday, Nov. 30 against Nezperce both teams came out firing up 3-pointers. Nezperce’s Preston Hill got the ball off the opening tap and drained a 3-pointer just 5 seconds into the game.
Rhett Schlader answered with a 3 which was then answered by Nezperce’s Parker Hill. Marcus Higgins made it four 3-pointers in the first 1:15 of play.
Higgins then connected from the baseline to give Prairie an 8-6 lead. That was the high point of the game for the Pirates though as Nezperce scored 8 straight points by taking advantage of Prairie turnovers and never looked back.
The Indians led 13-19 at the quarter break and used a 4-18 run in the second quarter to take a 25-37 halftime lead.
Nezperce continued to pull away in the second half as Prairie scored just 14 second half points and were outscored by Preston Hill who had 17 of his game-high 30 points in the second half.
Turnovers plagued the Pirates as they had 10 in the opening period and 22 in the game while Nezperce had just 14 total.Jared Higgins puts up a shot against Nezperce.
Schlader wound up with 11 points to lead the Pirates in scoring but sat out much of the third quarter with foul trouble. Higgins added 10 points while Tyler Hankerson scored 8, Lucas Arnzen 4 and Seth Chaffee and Dylon Bruegeman 3 each.
Prairie actually had a 38-32 rebounding edge but the difference came on a 7-shot sequence where Prairie kept rebounding their misses and still came up empty. Hankerson had 9 rebounds to lead the team while Arnzen and Schlader had 6 each.
Hankerson and Bruegeman each had 2 steals for the pirates while Chaffee and Dan Wemhoff had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 14 for 54 from the field, 26%, and 5 for 10 at the line 50%. Nezperce was 24 for 46 from the field, 52%, and 6 for 18 at the line, 33%.
Prairie is 1-1 on the season.
In a 2-quarter JV game Prairie fell to the Indians 13-17.
The Pirates struggled to put the ball in the hoop as they were 2 for 19 from the field, 0 for 7 in the second quarter. They also had a lot of opportunities at the free throw line but his just 9 of 20 attempts.
Prairie jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Tanner Ross scored a pair of free throws, Isaiah Shears scored a basket and Bryson Higgins a free throw but Nezperce outscored them 2-8 the rest of the quarter.
A free throw by Calvin Hinkelman tied the game at 8-8 early in the second quarter and Ross tied it at 10-10 with a free throw with 5:05 left. Nezperce then scored 5 straight and held on to win.
Higgins had 5 points to lead the scoring with Ross and Shears scoring 3 each and Hinkelman scoring 2.
Prairie had a 20-18 rebounding edge with Ross grabbing 7 rebounds and Shears 6.
Shears and Higgins had 2 steals each and Higgins had Prairie’s only assist.
