Pirates win 3 at Lapwai Tournament
The Prairie boys basketball team won all 3 games they played at the Lapwai Holiday Tournament held Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 27-29.
On Thursday they beat Deary 55-43. On Friday they beat Lakeside of Plummer/Worley 67-45 and on Saturday they beat Summit 71-50. Summit was a last minute replacement for Timberline, which dropped out of the tournament.
Vs. Deary
In Thursday’s game against Deary the Pirates held just a 12-10 lead after one quarter and extended it to 29-23 at the half. They led 46-34 after 3 quarters and led by as many as 18 points early in the fourth quarter.
The defense forced 33 turnovers in the contest.
Rhett Schlader led the Pirates in scoring with 12 points with Marcus Higgins and Jake Bruner scoring 8 each. Tyler Hankerson, Casey Danly and Lucas Arnzen scored 6 each while Dan Wemhoff and Dylon Bruegeman scored 4 each and Tanner Ross scored 1.
Higgins had 7 assists, Bruner 4 steals and Hankerson 7 rebounds.
The JV team also won 56-46.

Vs. Lakeside
In the game against Lakeside the Knights held a 10-13 lead midway through the first quarter. Prairie outscored Lakeside 3-0 over the final 3:34 of the quarter to knot the score at 13.Casey Danly scores against Lakeside as Dan Wemhoff watches.
In the second quarter the second unit reeled off 8 straight points to start the quarter and the Pirates blew out the Knights 28-7 to take a 41-20 halftime lead.
Prairie was up 26-16  when the starters came back in and they kept the momentum going the rest of the quarter.
Prairie also had a rare 6-point possession in the quarter as Seth Chaffee was fouled at the 3:06 mark. The person who fouled him said the wrong thing within earshot of the referee and got hit with a technical. Marcus Higgins made both technical free throws and Chaffee made both of his free throws. After Prairie inbounded the ball Hankerson got fouled and made both of his free throws.
The Pirates weren’t quite as dominating in the third quarter but still managed to outscore the Knights 14-9 to make it 55-29 heading into the fourth quarter.
With 4:01 left Prairie had their biggest lead at 64-33 then backed off the intensity as Lakeside outscored them 3-12 the rest of the way.
Marcus Higgins led the scoring with 16 points and added 4 assists. Arnzen scored 12 and had 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Bruner scored 11 with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Chaffee scored 9 while Schlader scored 5, Hankerson and Danly 4 each, Wemhoff 3, Jared Higgins 2 and Bruegeman 1.
Prairie dominated the boards 41-22.
The Pirates were 21 for 52 from the field, 40%, and 20 for 34 at the line, 59%. Lakeside was 19 for 44 from the field, 43% and 3 for 7 at the line, 43%.
The JV team also beat Lakeside 57-34.

Prairie Vs. Summit
On Saturday Prairie was to play Timberline. When the Spartans backed out, Summit stepped in . 
In the first half Prairie would build a lead and Summit would rally back. Prairie took a 9-2 lead to open the game only to see Summit pull within 9-6. Prairie led 15-7 by the end of the quarter and led by 10 at 21-11 after back to back 3-pointers by Chaffee and Schlader in the second quarter only to see Summit put together an 8-0 run to Lucas Arnzen goes for a shot against Summit with Michael Waters looking to time his jump just right for a block. At left is Summit’s Josh Lustig.cut the lead to 23-21 with 1:23 left in the half. Matthew Schwartz scored 4 of those 8 points and Josh Lustig hit a 3-pointer.
Prairie answered though with an 8-0 run of their own and ended the half back on top by 10 at 31-21.
Prairie carried that over into the second half by outscoring the Patriots 14-4 to open the third quarter and take a 20 point lead.
The closest the scrappy Patriots were able to get the rest of the way was 14 points at 54-40 with 7:01 left in the game.
A 17-4 run after that put Prairie up by 27 at 71-44. Summit scored the game’s final 6 points.
Marcus Higgins led the Pirates in scoring with 19 points which included three 3-pointers. Schlader and Arnzen scored 11 each while Bruner and Hankerson scored 9 each. Chaffee scored 7, Bruegeman 3 and Jared Higgins 2.
Summit was led in scoring by Michael Waters who had 16 points with Lustig and Shane Stubbers scoring 11 each, Schwartz 10 and Nathan Beckman 2.
Prairie had a 44-41 rebounding edge led by Arnzen who had 9. Bruner added 7 and Schlader and Chaffee 6 each. Lustig had 15 rebounds to lead the Patriots while Stubbers had 9 and Schwartz 8.
Marcus Higgins had 4 steals and 6 assists for Prairie while Waters had 4 steals for Summit.
Prairie was 28 for 67 from the field, 42%, and 11 for 19 at the line, 58%. Summit was 18 for 58 from the field, 31%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%.
The Pirates are now 7-3 on the season and Summit is 3-8.
Each team in the tournament had 3 players named to the all-star team. For Prairie those players were Schlader, Hankerson and Marcus Higgins. For Summit they were Lustig, Waters and Matthew Schwartz.
