Pirates win 2 of 3 league games
The Prairie boys basketball team played 3 league home games this past week and won 2 of them. They started with a 53-57 loss to Kamiah on Thursday, Jan. 10 then beat Potlatch 67-48 on Saturday, Jan. 12 and Clearwater Valley 66-48 on Monday, Jan. 14.
Vs. Kamiah
On Thursday, Jan. 10, The Pirates lost a league game to Kamiah 53-57 at Cottonwood.
Kamiah and Prairie have been playing each other for years in basketball but this was the first time in many years that it counted as a league game.
The game was close all the way although Prairie was fighting from behind for most of it.
Kamiah held a slim 16-18 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 29-35 lead at the half.
Prairie was only able to trim 2 points off that lead in the second half.
Prairie had trouble stopping Kamiah’s 6’8” post Matt Munch, who led the Kubs with 17 points.
Marcus Higgins led a balanced scoring attack for Prairie with 10 points while Seth Chaffee, Lucas Arnzen and Jake Bruner scored 9 points each. Rhett Schlader added 7 points while Casey Danly and Tyler Hankerson scored 3 each, Dan Wemhoff scored 2 and Dylon Bruegeman scored 1.
In the JV game Prairie knocked off the Kubs 58-49.

Vs. Potlatch
It was a tougher battle than the last time they played but Prairie still managed to beat Potlatch by a score of 67-48 in a league game at Cottonwood Saturday, Jan. 12.
The Pirates had beaten the Loggers by 35 earlier in the season.Tyler Hankerson gets in the lane for a shot against Potlatch.
This time around Potlatch took a 7-10 lead in the first quarter and after Prairie rallied to take a 15-12 lead, the Loggers came back to lead 15-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie was able to take the lead for good on Bruner’s basket to open the second quarter. Tyler Hankerson followed that up with a 3-point play and Bruner wound up scoring 10 points in the quarter as Prairie opened up a 37-27 lead at the half.
Potlatch would get no closer than 7 points in the second half.
Potlatch was within 8 with 2:40 left in the third quarter but Prairie then reeled off 10 straight points to take a 56-38 lead early in the fourth. Arnzen had a pair of baskets in that run with Chaffee, Bruner and Hankerson scoring 2 each.
Potlatch twice got within 12 in the fourth quarter but Prairie put the game away with a 9-0 run.
Bruner wound up with 19 points to lead the scoring while Arnzen had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Schlader added 10 points, Chaffee 9, Marcus Higgins 8 and Hankerson 7.
Prairie had a 46-32 rebounding advantage. In addition to Arnzen’s 12, Bruner, Schlader and Hankerson had 9 rebounds each.
Higgins and Hankerson had 4 steals each and Higgins had 7 assists.
Prairie was 30 for 64 from the field, 47%, and 6 for 16 at the line, 38%. Potlatch was 20 for 53 from the field, 38%, and 6 for 16 at the line, 38%.
In the JV game Prairie jumped out to a 10-0 start and rolled to an easy 73-35 win.
Isaiah Shears scored 10 and Tanner Ross 8 in the first quarter as Prairie built a 24-9 lead.
Shears added 4 more in the second and Daniel Mager and Mason Dalgliesh scored 3 each as Prairie made it 38-21 at halftime.
Prairie opened the third quarter with a 20-0 run as Ross and Shears scored 8 points each. Prairie led 67-27 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
Shears wound up with 22 points to lead all scorers and hit 9 of 15 shots from the field. Ross was even more accurate at 7 for 9 and scored 16 points. Both were perfect at the line. Dalgliesh, Devin Bruegeman and Dylon Bruegeman scored 5 points each while Bryson Higgins and Appy Enriquez scored 4 each. Jared Higgins, Calvin Hinkelman, Justin Schumacher and Mager scored 3 each. 
Potlatch held a slim 31-32 rebounding edge. Ross and Dalgliesh had 6 each to lead Prairie.
Dylon Bruegeman and Shears had 6 steals each while Jared Higgins, Bryson Higgins and Devin Bruegeman had 3 each. Dylon Bruegeman, Dalgliesh and Bryson Higgins had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 27 for 57 from the field, 47%, and 18 for 26 at the line, 69%. Potlatch was 16 for 38 from the field, 42%, and 3 for 14 at the line, 21%.
Potlatch had 35 turnovers to just 12 for Prairie.

Vs. C.V.
A 15-2 run in the third quarter helped Prairie shake free from C.V. as they went on to win 66-48 Monday, Jan. 14 at Cottonwood.
The Pirates two young post players did the bulk of the scoring as sophomore Arnzen scored 24 points and freshman Bruner scored 20.
Lucas Arnzen scores 2 of his 24 points against C.V.Prairie trailed only in the first quarter as C.V. jumped out to a 0-5 lead but Prairie came right back with 2 putbacks by Bruner and a putback by Arnzen to take a 6-5 lead.
C.V. took back the lead on a 3-pointer and led 8-12 when Marcus Higgins connected on a 3-pointer and Arnzen fed Bruner for a lay-up to give Prairie a 13-12 lead at the quarter break.
Prairie then scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to take a 25-12 lead. C.V. answered with a 1-8 run to cut the lead back down to 6.
Prairie scored the final points of the half though as a missed shot was tipped up in the air several times before Bruner was able to grab it and put it in just prior to the buzzer to give Prairie a 28-20 lead.
C.V. came storming out in the second half, just barely avoiding several turnovers against Prairie’s pressure to score 8 straight and tie the game at 28 with 5:20 left in the third quarter.
That’s when Prairie started their big 15-2 run to take back control of the game.
Bruner scored inside to put Prairie back into the lead for good. Schlader then converted a 3-point play and Bruner added another basket. After a C.V. score Prairie scored another 8 straight. Arnzen scored 2 baskets, Higgins dropped in a 12 foot jumper and Bruner scored a lay-up to make it 43-30.
Twice C.V. was able to pull within 9 in the fourth quarter but that was as close as they would get.
In addition to the big points from Arnzen and Bruner, Higgins scored 12 points, Schlader 7 and Hankerson 3.
Prairie had a 41-34 edge on the boards led by Bruner who had 13. Arnzen added 8 rebounds and Schlader had 7.
Schlader had 4 steals and 6 assists while Higgins had 3 steals and 6 assists.
Prairie was 28 for 65 from the field, 43%, and 7 for 14 from the line, 50%. C.V. was 16 for 47 from the field, 34%, and 14 for 22 at the line, 64%.
Prairie is now 9-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.
In the JV game Prairie’s full court pressure forced 14 first quarter turnovers as the Pirates jumped out to a 14-2 lead and held on to win 56-43.
Prairie took a 9-0 lead before C.V. score and then scored 5 more, 4 of those by Enriquez to take that 14-2 lead.
The second quarter was a lot more competitive as each team scored 14 points. Ross scored 4 for the Pirates while 5 others scored 2 points each as Prairie led 28-16 at the half.
Bryson Higgins and Hinkelman each hit a 3-pointer to open the second half scored and put Prairie up by 18 but C.V. bounced back and by the end of the third quarter Prairie still held the 12 point margin they had at the end of each of the first two quarters at 45-33.
Shears scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter to put Prairie up by 16 and C.V. was able to get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Enriquez made it a 13 points final margin with a 3-pointer in the final seconds.
Ross wound up with 16 points on 8 for 12 shooting to lead the team in scoring with Shears adding 11. Hinkelman and Enriquez scored 7 each while Higgins scored 5. Dylon and Devin Bruegeman each scored 4 and Dalgliesh scored 2.
C.V. held the rebounding advantage at 26-35. Ross led Prairie with 8 rebounds while Shears had 7. 
Higgins had 6 steals and 9 assists.
